“Ryland,” Simon said, his tone gentle but firm.

    Grace blinked, looking at Simon.

    “H-Huh?”

Simon’s gaze fixed on him. A look of knowing. Of understanding.

“Take me down,” he repeated. “Pin me before I pin you.”

“I don’t know,” says Simon. “I don’t even know where we’re going, they won’t tell me.” He buries his face in his knees and arms again, and Grace hears something that sounds suspiciously like a sob. Maybe Simon’s eyeballs were sweating too.

“You have to promise you’ll come back,” Grace demands, his own lower lip trembling. "Pinky promise!" He jabs his pinky into Simon’s cheek and pokes him with it until Simon looks up.

Simon’s eyes are red-rimmed, but Grace’s glad that he’s managed to surprise just the tiniest smile from him. “I’m not pinky promising, that shit’s for babies,” he says, eyeing Grace’s extended pinky with mock disdain.

“Then how am I supposed to know you’ll keep your promise?” Grace shoots back.

“We gotta seal the deal with something else,” Simon says seriously.

“What’s a ‘truss’?” Grace asked, blue eyes glancing up at Simon from where he studied the tiles on the mat.

Simon arched a brow as he looked at Grace, as if the answer should be obvious.

    “A truss,” Simon said plainly.

“Oh. Okay,” was all Grace could say in response to Simon’s tone. “No, hold on–not okay–that doesn’t answer my question?”

    “I can’t,” Simon pleaded, voice breaking. “Fuck, Ryland, I can’t, I can’t—”
“Even if I want you to?” Grace asked, and Simon’s breath caught in his chest. “Let go, Simon. Whatever you want to do to me, I’m game.”
“Don’t say that. Fuck, don’t say that. You don’t know what you’re asking for.”
“Don't discredit me. I know what I want.”
Simon jerked away from him with a snarl. “You’re gonna get hurt. I can’t control myself.”
    “Then let me help you.

Four months ago, the Eridians found a human welded into a metal box on the bottom of an ocean made of human blood, and somehow that's not the weirdest thing about the man. Even after they let him out of quarantine, he doesn't talk much, and Grace keeps a cordial but distant relationship with him--until he gets sick with some mystery illness and Grace gets tasked with helping him recover, because surely he knows what to do. (Spoiler alert: he doesn't. But he figures it out.)

She's been staring at the footage for over an hour today, the chase playing on a loop as it had in the days since it happened, Grace's bright yellow jacket a beacon in the blurs of gray buildings, black coats, and dull green grass. She stares at it for so long that it becomes the only thing she sees in her dreams anymore.

She meant to delete it. She meant to put it behind her and focus on the mission, focus on the Astrophage, focus on putting her betrayal so far back in her mind that she could continue living with her choices.

The videos are archived onto the Hail Mary instead.
