Summary
Charles Bingley takes residence of Netherfield Park for one reason: to give his friend Darcy a peaceful sanctuary after a brutal year. After Wickham’s scheme was revealed, Georgiana’s attempted suicide left her crippled and catatonic. Darcy, blaming himself, fell into self-destructive despair that even his closest friend could not break through. It is only when Darcy is alone in the countryside near Meryton that he finds a reason to hope: a beautiful young woman, walking alone, who he deliriously thinks is an angel. Summary
When Mr. Charles Bingley rode into Hertfordshire to acquaint himself with Netherfield Park it was on a purely accidental recommendation. Bingley was the sort of open, easy young man whom people would not scruple to share their opinions with, and the solicitor who took it upon himself to advocate for Netherfield could certainly not be blamed for seeing a very desirable tenant in him. Bingley was at that time not yet of age two years and unmarried, but he had the sort of good-humoured and generous character that must recommend him to almost anybody.

He looked out toward the sea. "I thought it better not to intrude by presuming your notice after--" he faltered, then said with effort, "after all that has passed between us. I believed it would be unwelcome."
"Is it your habit," she asked with the faintest smile, "to determine a lady's preferences without consultation?"
This was not the right thing to say, bringing up those things they would both rather forget. His expression shifted--perhaps embarrassment, perhaps frustration. "I did not mean to offend."
