She’s ready to welcome them inside, kettle set to boil for tea to warm them up from an afternoon spent outside playing, a cartoon on the television, before she spots his tear-stained cheeks and haunted eyes and realizes just how out of place such an expression is on her godson's face.

There’s a pregnant pause.
It’s broken by a long slurp from Tenko’s koolaid, followed by a gratingly noisy stutter of air as it runs out of juice. “I’d ask you if you’d gotten into Touya’s mushrooms again.”
“What?—No, oh my god, I’m not on drugs.”
