Summary
Since they were established in Houston, Texas, Longrove High School and Fairmont High School have been rival schools. Constantly head-to-head in sports competitions since 1948, the tension between the Lancers and the Flints never dwindled. It didn’t help that Texans were avid sports fans, only intensifying the pressure all of the athletes felt. Stands full and boisterous at every competition, from county to national, the expectations were high yet always met.
Of course, the teams mentioned are their cheerleading squads, as none of their schools’ other teams had ever even made regionals. Naija Hall and Bricia Ignacio, the captains of these squads, feel the tension the most. Maybe more off the competition mat than on it. “Hit It” follows Bricia and Naija through their junior year in high school to their senior year in university, always feeling the stress of the bittersweet cheer environment and flourishing, incandescent emotions for each other. How could these southern cheer captains who were supposed to represent the pinnacle of femininity navigate their unlikely love?
