Mikey was... difficult.
"It comes with being a teenager." Raph tried to tell himself... but he knew it didn't. Donnie and Leo never acted like this. This... this wasn't normal.
"If you continue to baby him, he will never learn to be independent. Or worse... Just saying. You might end up... ya know. Chasing him away."
Oh, how Raph wished he had listened to Donnie.

They used to be close. The closest. Until Raph's smothering became... too much. And they drifted apart.
Mikey never realized just how much it hurt that he and Raph drifted away, until he ends up with an unconcious Raphael, trapped in a collapsing building, and unable to reach his brothers.

Donnie blinked twice before his brow furrowed. "You're...not really a 'water person'?" he asked, making air quotes with his fingers. "April, I've seen you enter far too many swimming pools for that to be a factual statement."
"Yeah, the shallow end maybe," April replied. "Huge difference between three feet and six feet, Dee. It's just a hang up, don't worry about it."
Donnie's quick mind ran through all his memories of 'April in a body of water.' April standing in water? Sure. Kayaking upon its surface? Many times. But swimming? He actually couldn't recall a time where he'd ever witnessed her treading water.
"You...can't swim," he said slowly, his expression one of dawning realization.
Donnie takes it upon himself to teach April how to swim. The lesson in turtle biology is an unexpected bonus.

“Why?” Leo had pried humouring his brother's boring facts at the time. “Also what is that?”
Little did he know he was about to find out a little too personally exactly what that is.

.“Well aren't you cute” He giggles as it all settles in, a sharp prickle in his throat as he took the time to run his thumb against the side of the shell before speaking. “I will call you green.” He declared setting his child to rest among the stars of his eyes, his anchor, his moon.
The egg doesn't respond, its an egg of course, but Leo blinks memorized at it all the same.

Raph stayed awake watching over him, thrumming with anxiety over his brother in distress, and did not consider for even a moment that this wasn't natural. That everyone else didn't intuitively know exactly how their little brothers felt, all the way down to their bones. They were his whole wide world – of course he could. He couldn't imagine not knowing the beat of their heart as well as his own.
