May 24 2026: Unconnected fics. The author has some great worldbuilding skills, and I’m a sucker for fantasy. I’d say “Forged in Love” is my favorite, though I didn’t re-read these.

20 May 2026: Good lord. This fic is amazing. Like, proper-published-novel amazing.
I have many thoughts and I don’t want to clog up the tab
This hit so many of my academic interests: psychology, philosophy, disability studies, human identity through sci-fi… it’s like the author took inspiration from my college transcript.
I haven’t felt so seen in a piece of fiction like this in… years, probably. With a character I don’t typically relate to, no less. The questions Wilson turns over and over in his head, what frustrates him and what he avoids. Ruminating in spiraling metaphors, and how he can never seem to communicate as thoroughly as he contemplates. It’s all intimately familiar.
And the plot! The world they built is fascinating, culturally rich and well thought-out, and just so damn interesting. Everyone feels so real. The author doesn’t bend the characters to fit what’s desirable. It’s something happens, here’s how this person in this context reacts, and here’s the consequences of those reactions. It’s wonderful. I love how uncomfortable this fic made me, and how much it made me think. Good. Shit.CW Ambiguous/Open Ending: The ending suits the author’s intent, and my personal interpretation gives me faith it’ll work out, but this is an open ending in its truest form.

Summary

Genuinely amazing. Now, I might be a tad biased, because I LOVE DBH so so much. However, I think it says something that despite vaguely knowing how the plot would go, the story was still thoroughly captivating. T author didn’t reinvent the wheel — the concepts and major events matched that of DBH — but it’s clear that this allowed them to focus more on the characters, on how the interactions and reactions would be effected by their personalities.

When the door to Wilbur’s flat hisses open, releasing more smoke and grit than usual, he’s got great big circles under his eyes. Tommy blinks at him once, twice. “You look like shit,” he says, and ducks his way inside.
“Gee, thanks,” Wilbur says, no heat to his voice. He lingers a moment at the door, head turning this way and that, before letting it shutter closed. “Bad week for the ol’ asthma. You been good?”
“Coping,” Tommy sighs. “I’m still alive, Wil - y’know how it is.”
“A hard knock life, up in those towers,” Wilbur agrees. He’s smiling. “Want anything to eat?”Or: Tommy's a pure-blooded, unmodified human from up in the skyscrapers. Wilbur insists he's unmodified, but has been acting cagey lately. Phil's got great big metal wings, Tubbo runs a pub for the modified and Ranboo's part of the hidden network to get them to safety, Techno doesn't bother hiding his cybernetic eyes or prosthetic leg, Tommy's got some bias to work through - and amongst all of this, Wilbur has vanished, and Tommy's willing to do anything to see him again.
