Summary
“I wonder how things would be if we’d evolved on the same planet,” Grace says, leaning his forearms on his elevated knee. The one kept up by Rocky’s body. It puts even more weight on him, and Rocky feels the texture of Grace’s shoe through the xenonite, the bumps and ridges, the rocks and leaves stuck to the bottom. “You think we’d eat each other?”
It takes every ounce of self control for Rocky to keep the noise he makes somewhat dignified. He kind of needs Grace to stop talking.
/////
Or: Rocky learns about persistence hunting, and it’s both the most terrified and the most aroused he’s ever been.

Summary
It’s been a little while since Grace has moved into her bio-dome on Erid, and Adrian is keen to act on these strange, overwhelming feelings they’re harbouring for this alien. All they need is an evening with Grace, alone, and some time to prepare the perfect gift to begin their courtship.
When Rocky gets called away to an engineering thrum, an opportunity is finally provided. But of course, as with everything Grace is involved with, nothing goes to plan.

Summary
There are still four viable sperm samples in the Hail Mary’s deep freeze storage. Ryland knows this because he’s asked Mary about it twice since the day Jude was born. Once, when she was barely six months old, which unnerved him so badly that he slammed the laptop shut before Mary could finish telling him about the samples.
The second time was about five minutes ago, give or take a few seconds.

“But you said you didn’t have a word for – for forcing someone into reproduction?”
“No. Is different, but equivalent violation. Means, to force to sleep.”
–
Or, Dr. Ryland Grace has yet to confront the choices taken from him. Eridian norms, ironically enough, force the issue.

“You can see any medical specialist you need,” Stratt says, finishing her thought. “Elective surgery that would impede your ability to work is another matter.”
“Any specialist?” Grace asks weakly.
Is this the problem? He just doesn’t know? This conversation should have happened with his doctor at the intake physical. It seems impossible that it could have been missed. “Any,” she emphasizes, looking at him directly.

Summary
“Not — not understand,” Rocky continues, a little higher now, his body shuddering. “Try Vℓ times, all failure failure failure. Eridian mating sometimes fail, but not this much. This much unprecedented. Thought location, temperature, time of year problems in previous attempts — fixed all, Grace know Rocky and Adrian work to fix all, and still failure, still.”
Grace fidgets with his hands, stretching each knuckle and palming the free edge of each nail, to keep from throwing himself onto Rocky and howling like an animal.
(Because somewhere along the way, Rocky and Adrian's wish for kids had become Grace's own, too.)
OR: Rocky and Adrian's eggs keep dying long before they hatch, and no one knows why. Grace — who definitely doesn't see himself as a parent to those hatchlings, how stupid and impossible would that be?! — has the normal reaction, which is inventing gene therapy from scratch to help the next egg survive.

Summary
So, Rocky promised to do fewer late-at-night-while-Grace-is-asleep Wikipedia spirals, and I promised to write up some procedures for Rocky to follow in the event of various medical emergencies. I wasn't a medical doctor, but I was closer to it than Rocky, so I got to do a few Wikipedia spirals of my own, writing up a manual on how Rocky might plausibly remove my appendix or restart my heart if it stopped. I found the process strangely soothing, thinking about how Rocky would care for me if I needed him to, how Rocky always wanted to care for me. Putting my life in his hands was nothing new, really, but it was funny how often I ended up happy-crying while writing up a Rocky-friendly explanation of an endoscopy or a tracheostomy or a limb amputation. Because all I could think was how much I trusted him, how he made me feel so safe.
Rocky memorized every word that I wrote, and made his own notes as well. The How to Fix Grace binder, as I labelled it, grew thicker and thicker as we made plans to look after my soft human body.
So, after all that, of course it was Rocky who got sick.
