Because Charles is the embodiment of sunshine, a human being blessed by sun deities themselves, though not unknown to the darkness humankind can suffer from. It wasn't that Charles had never been touched by such darkness; it is that Charles could always conquer it and act like he had not been affected by it at all.
Max wasn't the same. If anything, he sometimes held hands with darkness and let it drag him down, too tired to try and free himself.
