Summary
The first time she told that tale to the 118, he'd been too confused to say anything, and afterwards, he'd simply not wanted to rock the boat. He'd been too scared of her abandoning him again, and knowing that he deserved better didn't help that fear. Today though, he was too annoyed and resentful and really fucking angry to care.

Summary
Buck didn't know how he got from struggling with a particular joke at work and trying to be in tune with his feelings about it, to confiding in Eddie, to then Eddie cutting him off and looking at him like he was a disgusting freak.
He would like a refund for the past 24 hours, please and thank you.
With one of his best friendships imploding, a ladder truck exploding seems about par for the course. It does put things into perspective, though. And it's not a nice view.

Summary
Three months after the lawsuit, the team was still angry with Buck and it didn't look like that would change any time soon, if at all.
He'd hoped that by keeping his head down, his compliance and perseverance would eventually soothe the team's hurt feelings. But nothing had changed and it became harder and harder to keep on fighting.
'It took too much energy just getting out of bed and dragging himself to the station every shift. The cold shoulders, the snide remarks, the hateful pranks. It had been a fight just getting through the day and keeping himself together. Maybe if he'd been able to see Christopher...
But he was so tired now, so tired.'
It was just an ordinary Saturday when the last straw broke the camel's back.

Summary
"I'm leaving the 118."
Hen and Ravi immediately shot Buck pleading looks. What were they even asking? Probably not to make it weird.
His supposed best friend, the man who had berated him for making a life-altering decision without him with the whole union thing, the man who had extracted a promise from him to never do that again without talking it through with Eddie first, that man had now turned around and done it himself.
How could he not make it weird?
---
So Buck left. And did something stupid, because what else was new?
---
Turns out, he did make it weird. Just not in any way anyone could have predicted.

Summary
This was what his freak out over Red had been about. Not the fact that he wanted a family and feared losing them, feared growing old with no-one to care. He'd already known that for a long time. It's why he left Pennsylvania behind. He'd wanted to grow roots, it just took awhile to find the right spot.
No, what had him freaking out was that on some level he knew these people, the core group on A shift, weren't his and never would be.

Summary
Evan was 12 when she told Maddie she thought she was a girl. Or mostly a girl? Sometimes she felt like a boy.
She'd told it to Maddie in a whisper while avoiding her gaze. Her heart had pounded and her palms got sweaty, and she almost, almost never said a thing.
But Maddie had supported her and Evan had been walking on clouds for days. And then life just had to bring her down. It always did.
---
These experiences, however difficult, had shaped her. And when Buck bounced into the 118 fire station for the first time, it changed everything just a little.

Summary
Buck wanted to be wanted, more than he wanted to be loved. He wanted someone to invest in him and expect something in return. It was an attitude that made him vulnerable to predators, he knew, and Peter very much was one. But he had Mischief to love and protect and cherish him. And maybe this was what made their triad work.
---
Buck had not expected the advantages that came with mating Peter Hale, but he was definitely going to enjoy them.

Summary
To Buck the lunchtime conversation about his supposed lack of enlistment in the Navy came completely out of left field. He knew that his fire family couldn't compute that he was a SEAL. Eddie's reaction, though, took him by surprise.
That conversation, however, had ripped the rose-coloured glasses right off his face and forced him to take a long, hard look at his relationships with his teammates.
It was an eye-opener.

Summary
Finding out he was a spare parts baby was horrifying enough on its own. But Chimney was the one who had been told by Maddie first and Chim couldn't keep someone else's secret to save his own life. So in no time A shift knew and from there it spread to the whole house.
He just wanted some time to wrap his head around this bitter truth. Instead he had to ignore all the looks full of pity and the not-so-discrete gossip, while also supporting his teammates through their emotional responses to the tragic back story that he'd only just learned about himself.
Thanks ever so much, sis.

Summary
When Buck cut himself trying to help a man stuck in a windshield like a bad Halloween prop, he expected captain Nash to lecture and berate him. He did not expect him to declare that Buck would be going out in the field again from now on.
After five months of being man behind every single shift, because of the blood thinners? Yeah, he did not see that coming.
He'd thought he'd be happy when the time finally came. Or at the very least hopeful.
But he isn't. At all.
