Part of that might be the faulty connection, especially if it's snowing in Lone Spruce, but honestly Scott wouldn't be surprised if Etho didn't pull his mask down to talk a little louder. "You might, uh… You might want to come up to the fox soul spawner. I'm literally looking at a baby ender dragon right now. Also, uh… I think it's dying."

He pushes his thumb against Martyn's gumline. Martyn rolls his eyes, but doesn't bite. Maybe just to mess with him, Bdubs hitches the curve of his lip higher. "Huh. You've still got all your spawnling teeth. I don't even see any budding fangs… Hey- you wanna punch me in the face?"
"Yessir, but that's unrelated to the XP gain."
"Oh, you're freakin' hilarious…" Bdubs withdraws his hand, wiping it dry against his leg. Since all of Martyn's friends have been jumpy, wide-eyed sheep with extra evasive sprinkles since they got here, Bdubs cracks the conversation open like a smacked walnut: "Where did you get your Education? Some sort of cult, right?"
Bdubs and Etho wrestle a skin on their server hub’s newest cult escapee. The glowing, hissing Martyn lives in a fishbowl (and/or under Etho’s couch) until he doesn’t.

Scott glides his other hand down Pearl's leg, cradling her foot with both. He lifts her ankle, tugging off the front bit of skin. It slides like silk beneath his fingers. He doesn't linger his touch against the raw blue code of her exposed inner foot. He turns instead to the other leg, repeating the gesture over there.
"I don't mind, Scott," Pearl says again. "You've just been murdered in that. I'm fine with it. Skinless around you; skinless both."
Quickened heartbeats. Scott guides her second foot free from skin. "Thank you. I'll be fine. You lie down, Pearl. I'll get this washed." Washing would be nice right now. He needs a minute. He's been murdered in the kitchen and he needs to walk away before he's sick all over the floor.
Scott was only borrowing Pearl's green life when he died. They've not discussed their boundaries yet. Joel threw things into chaos by killing him in cold boogeyman blood. Scott cannot look at Pearl as they calm down together. He tries not to, anyway, because he's afraid (so afraid) of the words that might slip between his lips.
"Can I have another one?"

He's only on his green life thanks to Pearl. Or on her green life, maybe. It snuggles inside of him almost crookedly, as if it doesn't fit. It wasn't meant to be his life. It's floppy around him at the shoulders and imaginary hem, like he's walking through the cottage in one of Pearl's midnight-colored hoodies and nothing else except his own slippers.
I'm okay with that, actually.
If there were such a thing as soulmates, maybe it would feel like this.
It's hard to maintain consistent #cozy cottagecore vibes when the local scam artist of a wizard keeps rummaging through your bird feeder. Scott and Pearl cuddle anyway.

Ah. Mumbo chuckles (weakly) and takes a seat at the table across from Etho. “Well, um… Funny story about that. You remember Last Life? … Martyn happened.”
“How did-? … Oh.” Grian pauses, searching out the word. Then his eyebrows lift. “Ohhhh…”
Roleplaying the act of lying to your best friend, squeezing the soul out of him, and then devouring it to "become human again" is the easy part. Breaching the subject of soul-sharing with that same best friend - out of character - before it all goes down on set? ... Not so much.
Grian's soul tastes like waffles...

Maybe Grian's such a grump because he doesn't rest, and it's never the right time to bring that up, because Grian's closed off and cool-minded every single day.
It's okay.
This morning's different. They're sharing the blanket. They're sharing the bed. Neither of them has gotten up to start the daily chores, because Grian needs his rest and Scar doesn't want to yet. He's breathing, soft like a whisk in waffle batter, against the ruffles of Grian's hair. Scar keeps one arm tucked across him. Since he's the one awake, the soulbond is biased in his favor. He can feel the chronic pain aching at the small of his back, right below the spot his wings would normally be.
That's okay, too. Scar tucks his face in Grian's hair, holding him to his chest. You stayed, he wants to whisper, except he won't, because Grian's still drowsy (if not entirely asleep). They've never shared their bed before. And Scar's not going to be the one to scare him off.

Ren shakes him back and forth like a handheld chew toy. Grian stares back at him like his mind’s been blended up, chest heaving as he fights through the raw binary in his system. He blinks several times and Ren huffs again, ruffling his hair.
“Martyn… My bow.”
Martyn hovers beside Cleo, clutching his half-empty cup. “Ren, this is horribly stupid- We’re all real drunk-”
Grian smacks Ren’s other hand from his hair. “Poor man’s Dodgebolt? I’ll take that challenge, Ren; you’ve no idea who you’re dealing with. Hope you’ve got a comfy bed waiting at the wolf hybrid spawn temple… New Bork’s gonna wish you never met me. Well? Let’s begin. This is child’s play.”
Ren and BigB are dead. Tango and Jimmy went too, but that’s nothing noteworthy. At Jimmy’s afterparty, maybe with a few too many 1s and not enough 0s sloshing around his system, Ren finally confronts Grian about his and BigB’s secret soulmate affair.
Scar watches from the sidelines... And lets it all play out.

Cleo stares across the river that divides the Clockers from the T.I.E.S. And she breathes, slowly, through her nostrils. And she wishes, not for the first time…
… that I was running this roleplay dynamic with him.

Scott rubs his temples with thumb and forefinger. Aw, geez. Mental storm. Then he holds out his hand, indicating Martyn’s paper. “So… what exactly went so wrong with your phantom hybrid submission ritual that Bdubs made you file an incident report over it?”
Martyn looks down at the yellow card in his hand. “Uh… File this one under ‘Tore the soul of Scar’s cat from her mortal vessel, used her in a game of catch at the competitive camming practice field, and pretty much’ - that’s a [sic], by the way - ‘dropped her in the Void to be swallowed up and erased forever.’ Um…”
He lifts his eyes. Scott’s a step beyond ‘tired mayor of the portal hub’ right now. His face is in his hands, fingers rubbing along his cheeks. Martyn clears his throat. “The good news is, I’ve learned my lesson and I will never, ever repeat this mistake.”

Joel fritzes for two seconds, wiping his thumb against his lips, before he steadies his pixels and speaks again. “Yeah? What about it? You jealous or something? I seem to recall you two having separate beds when I snuck into the snow fort a couple times back in Last Life.”
Bdubs’ wings prickle up again. “Oh, that’s just ‘cuz we have different sleep schedules… You know how it is- phantom hybrids like their sleep and me especially; stuff like that… Just easier! Anyway, Etho likes a nice firm mattress ‘cuz he always sleeps on his back and stomach. I like soft ones for my side. We worked it out, no problem!”
“That’s funny,” Joel says, offhand and uncaring. His wings are down, though he’s still rubbing his face. “He was always up later than I was in Double Life, and he never had an issue setting spawn in a squishy bed with me.”
Obsessed with Joel’s backpedaled comment to Bdubs in Secret Life Ep 1 about how the only time he’s ever seen Etho panic is when they perma-died in Double Life. What was that.
(I said back then, blissfully unaware of how many Boat Boys crumbs were to come in later sessions…)
