Summary
Canada had given him his life as he knew it, but it had never felt one hundred percent comfortable, either. He missed Russia sometimes, but it didn’t have the thing that mattered most. Ilya had exactly one home, and it was this: his face pressed into a smooth chest, his head tucked under a strong jaw, with freckled arms wrapped around him and delicate fingers combing through his hair. Anywhere else was a temporary excursion.
A treatise on second (and third) languages, homesickness, acceptance, Shane's struggle learning Russian, and the things people do when they care.

Summary
"It was nothing, Ilya. Don't worry about it."
"Ah," Ilya said, and something like understanding crossed his face. "Was about us, then."
Shane pressed his forehead to Ilya's neck. Of course Shane couldn't just slip this by, of course he would be figured out. He wrapped Ilya up in a hug and moved his hand up and down his back, in a way that he hoped said it doesn't matter.
"He just- after he checked me, I called him a dick, and then he said I'd need my big scary Russian husband to protect me. And then he called you a name, and…"
Shane didn't know how to finish that sentence, so he let it trail off. And it felt so unfair. And I got more angry than I had any reason to. And I hate that I can't go one game without my sex life being brought up in some way. And it's happened a million other times, so why should I have cared on this one specific occasion?
Over the course of the first half of his fifth season on the Centaurs, Shane considers retirement, homophobia, his public life, family, and his legacy. He also gets a tooth knocked out, visits the beach, and is repeatedly pissed off by how hot his husband is.

Summary
Shane wasn't looking back at him. He assumed that Ilya would be paying attention to the game, not its spectators. Sofia was sat upright in his lap. He was moving her back and forth to follow the puck. Ilya could see his mouth moving, even at this distance- no doubt he was explaining the rules to her infant ears. Hockey would be her first language.
Sofia was more interested in the person holding her than the game. She tipped her little head back, back, back until she was looking up at her dad. The two of them smiled, and then Shane leaned down ever so slightly.
He was brushing their noses together in the softest little nuzzle Ilya had ever seen. When he was done, Shane pressed a kiss onto her forehead.
At twenty-three, Shane Hollander was convinced that life after hockey would be empty. He couldn't imagine a world where he'd be completely happy without the focus and drive that came with playing a professional sport.
By thirty-seven, Shane was convinced that life after hockey was better. Who needed skates and sticks when your daughter was looking up at you with such a perfect, tiny smile, and your husband was winning games for all three of you?

Summary
The video returns to the set, with the camera on Harris, Shane, and Ilya again. Harris flips to the next question card.
Harris: Who expressed interest in the other first?
Shane and Ilya each raise the other's shoe.
Harris: Ooooo! You disagree!
Ilya: Shane. We both know that it was you.
Shane: You were showing off! On purpose! You wanted me to react.
Ilya: If that helps you sleep at night.
Harris: Care to tell the story?
Shane and Ilya speak over each other.
Shane: No way in hell.
Ilya: After the cameras stop.
Shane and Ilya, freshly married and days away from their first game together, agree to make a silly video as a couple for the Centaurs' social media.

Summary
"No m'not," Shane said, somehow pressing his face even more into Ilya's body. "All I ever did was play hockey. Now, I don't know what I'm gonna do. I hope we have a baby soon."
The car went quiet at that. When Shane looked up, Ilya was looking out the window, jaw set.
"S' something wrong?" Shane asked. He ran his fingertips along the warm skin of Ilya's forearm.
Ilya turned back to face him, expression softened. Whatever pensiveness had taken hold of him was gone.
"No. Everything is perfect."
After sixteen seasons of professional hockey, Shane Hollander retires from the NHL in the interest of starting a family with his loving husband. It's maybe a little earlier than he would've liked, but with his thirty-five year old knees beginning to protest, it makes sense.
He's happy. He and Ilya have been working towards this for nearly a decade.
He's also terrified, wondering if this is the biggest mistake of his life, and thinking that maybe he should take it all back. But mostly, he's happy.

Summary
Shane grimaced as he was tugged, by his head, to take a step towards the boards. Had Rozanov not noticed that their cages were stuck together?
"Stop trying to walk away, asshole!"
Rozanov took another step. Shane thought for sure he was going to trip and take Rozanov down with him, but then a warm hand on his back steadied him. Shane's body betrayed him by enjoying the touch—he felt a little flutter in his stomach, a slight warmth on his cheeks.
"You like me so much more than I thought," Rozanov purred as he took his hand back. "Don't want me to go anywhere."
"Oh my god, you are completely insufferable."
Superstar centers Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov get a little too close for comfort during a Boston vs. Montreal game.

Summary
Had anyone else ever seen Shane like this? Was this privilege possibly his alone? Ilya considered it. He knew Shane hadn't slept with the two other men he'd hooked up with—far too risky for his control freak of a husband. Sleeping beside a woman was safer, but Shane hadn't had many proper girlfriends and didn't seem like the type to ask a hookup to spend the night. That left Rose as the only real option, and Ilya truly had no idea if he'd ever shared a bed with her.
It didn't matter. Even if someone else had slept next to Shane, they'd never have seen this: Shane tucked up against them, his lovely face pressed into their chest, adoring and affectionate even in sleep. Shane had never loved anyone else, and he'd never be so candid in his tenderness with a person he didn't love and trust.
Stunning. Perfect.
Ilya should be asleep, but his husband is simply too beautiful not to admire.

Summary
"You look good like this."
Shane, too lost to the world for embarrassment, whimpered. Ilya's hand was still on his throat. "W-what do you mean?"
Ilya moved his thumb back and forth, swiping affectionately. "I mean you look good. With your eyes hidden. Brings out your jaw, and your pretty mouth."
The words pretty mouth were going to echo in Shane's head for the next ten years.
Shane asks if he and Ilya could experiment with a blindfold. Ilya, of course, agrees.

Summary
"Yes. Not a big party. It will be chill. Mostly just the team and partners. Bood has fun parties." Ilya wasn't meeting his eyes.
Shane still didn't know what to say, and he still had no clue why Ilya had brought it up. "Oh."
Ilya looked up at him then. His eyebrows were slightly furrowed, his jaw tight. Something was going unsaid.
Is he asking me for permission?
Honestly, Shane wanted to tell him no. Ilya going to that party felt like a waste of their time together, and they got so little of it. Still, if he really wanted to go, Shane wouldn't stop him.
"Did you want to go or something?" Shane asked. He pulled the pillow out of his lap. His feet had been tucked under his legs, so he moved them to be flat on the ground. "I could stay here, I guess. Or head back to—"
"I want you to go too. I want you to come with me to the party."

Summary
He gets home and his father is angry. That's the norm, so Ilya barely even cares to notice it, except his father is really angry. He doesn't like that Ilya was out all day. He's pacing the room in circles around Ilya, interrogating him on why he's home so late, and Ilya wants to roll his eyes.
You want me to play in the KHL, yes? Then I need to practice.
The answer was bullshit, for many reasons. Grigori Rozanov didn't know it yet, but Ilya would never play a single KHL game. At least, he hoped not. If things went the way Ilya wanted them to, he'd be drafted to the NHL in 2009, and he'd move to America, and he'd have money and fame and he'd never have to think about this godawful place again.
He only wishes he could bring his mother with him.

Summary
The picture he must've made in that moment: naked and tied up, on his knees, untouched and hard, with Ilya down his throat, drool all over him, staring up at Ilya through his lashes. He was glad he couldn't actually see himself, it would've been too much, but he had no doubt this was a mental image Ilya would be saving forever.
Shane's been antsy all day, and Ilya proposes he spend some time on his knees to calm his nerves. Despite his better judgment, Shane agrees.

Summary
Shane thought about it, a lot more than he should've. And it showed. It showed in the way he'd begged Ilya to sell his Ducati the summer they got married. It showed in the number of times he'd had to calm his racing mind when Ilya took twenty minutes longer than expected at the grocery store.
It showed in his heaving breaths, now. He was sitting up in his bed, his husband sleeping peacefully next to him, and he felt like he was on the edge of a panic attack.
The plane didn't crash, and Ilya didn't die.
Shane still feels the aftershocks.

"You getting ready for me too, Hollander?"
Shane's breath caught in his throat. Yes, he almost said, but that would go to Ilya's stupid vampire head, and Shane had no interest in dealing with it. He sipped his own wine with a shaky hand.
"Maybe I just like a rare cut."
Ilya squeezed the meat of his thigh under the table, which sent a fresh wave of heat through his body, then leaned in so close to Shane that his lips nearly brushed Shane's ear.
"Is that why you gave me fuck-me eyes when you ordered it?"
Or: 18th-century Paris, in which Shane is an overachieving shipbuilder on a business trip, Ilya is a decadent nobleman out for blood, and this is hardly the first time they've met.

Summary
Ilya thinks about the last night they spent together, thinks about Shane splayed out on a hotel mattress pleading for his touch, thinks about how they hadn’t even kissed, and it starts as a strange little tickle in the back of his throat. Barely-there. He could ignore it if he wanted.
Then the intensity grows, flourishes into full-blow irritation, and suddenly he’s sputtering on his Coke and attracting the attention of the woman in the first-class seat across the aisle from him. He thinks it’s just some odd coughing fit, or that he inhaled his soda on accident, so he’s shocked when he feels something soft and smooth and triangular against his tongue.
It’s not until he spits the object into the napkin he’d received with his drink that he can see what it is: a long, thin, green leaf. A sepal.
As soon as Ilya realizes what he’s looking at, he’s flooded with dread.
Ilya's known these feelings were doomed from the start. He never thought they'd literally kill him.

Things were different for Shane. When hockey left him, he would have nothing left to give.
