Here’s the thing: for the longest time, Art can’t sleep. It eludes him no matter how hard he tries. Even when he’s exhausted from a long day at practice, in bed, when the dorm is dark, he can’t seem to sleep.

Before either can say anything, Patrick closes the distance between them with a kiss. It’s soft and chaste, nothing like their inadvertent makeout session just a few minutes ago when Tashi had pulled away from them. Patrick’s mouth still tastes like hers, mixed with the residual flavor of beer and cigarettes. The kiss is over as soon as it’d started, Patrick’s head dropping back down, looking suddenly shy.
Art definitely can’t think of what to say now. He just stays there, his mouth still open, his eyes searching Patrick’s face for answers.
“Sorry,” Patrick mutters, looking away. “Don’t really know why I did that.”

What he needed more than anything was a break, a chance to put it all down and embrace his simplest desires, who knew a cocky Tennis player would offer that to him on a silver platter?
*This is a canon adjacent AU threading through both the Heated Rivalry (TV) and Challengers timeline. Our story picks up in the second half of 2012, with a 21 year old Ilya and a 24 year old Patrick. For reference, the start of the season Ilya wins the Stanley Cup and Patrick hooks up with Tashi in Atlanta.
What began as a way for them both to toss their messiest feelings at a willing target morphed into something deeper and what started as a coping mechanism came to mean more than either of them had bargained for.
For the sake of the story (and because it just makes sense), Patrick is also bilingual with his second language being French.

“When did you take this picture…” He was stunned looking back at this picture. The clarity of the indents from Art’s perfect teeth. Patrick’s skin red from the initial irritation. He supposed he should just be lucky Art didn’t break skin. Slightly disturbed but those stupid butterflies are persistent in his stomach (and his dick), it's making him sick.
