Summary
Ruling a province, hiding his venin state; there's a lot on Xaden's shoulders. Not least that he no longer trusts himself to be with Violet. Her signet is suffering as a result, so as she scours for a cure for him, Xaden plans to ensure all her needs are met, even if he has to use a certain wingleader.
Dain isn't as in control as he wants people to believe. As he seeks to win back Violet's trust, he instead finds connection with another isolated group. He becomes dedicated to the Fliers, especially a certain princess helping him train his signet, but will the secrets he's pulled into shatter the fragile peace he's found?
Cat hides scars from a past life at court, some she doesn't fully understand herself. She has duties as a noble, but also seeks to prove the worth of the Fliers in a place dominated by Riders. What she didn't plan on, was catching feelings for one in the process.
Things bubbles away within the walls of Basgiath, but outside, war is marching ever closer.

I don’t question the command, digging my toes into my mental haven. The chaos settles, redirecting to my hands. The world goes dark, and visions play across my mind, short vignettes from Mira’s perspective, all revolving around Violet. Violet. Gods, there she is. Absolutely radiant. I could drink in her visage—that smile, that hair—all day. She’s the drop of sunshine in an otherwise cloudy existence.
The visions shift like reflections on water, blending and jumping into each other, only giving me glimpses in a strange, disjointed way. Though I don’t recognize any one particular scene, it all feels familiar, like I’m revisiting a world from a long forgotten dream, and somehow I’m now privy to information I have no business knowing. Vi hooking up with an infantry soldier for instance. Ew. I did not need to know that.
In a blink, I’m back to myself.
Whoa. What was that?
“Cath?”

This story centers around the dual POVs of Gwen, an original character from Poromiel, and Dain. With both of them having their own closet full of skeletons, will these characters be able to trust one another and fight together? Or will the secrets they carry push them further apart, burying them underneath the weight. There may be some minor spoilers of Fourth Wing and Iron Flame, but I have taken lots of creative liberties with how the plot will unfold. So this is a Cat/Dain fic.
Set just after the throne scene in Iron Flame.
It's being based on canon themes and theories. So everything from Cat and Dain (and Xaden) is based on stuff Yarros has written, but I've definitely taken liberties with some of the others.
Cat and Dain are both struggling with the trauma of a controlling parental figure. Cat is dealing with Tecarus demands about who she should marry and Dain is still coming to terms with his defection.
Along with all of that we have the Xaden/Violet square.

A reformed Dain wants to prove himself to revolution leadership by helping to unify fliers and riders. Cat wants fliers on even footing with riders, but is deeply suspicious of true unity, maybe with good reason.
There's fighting and politics and a little spice and some dancing. Mostly Dain gets to know Catriona and tries really hard not to accidentally call her Cath.
