He thinks, sometimes, in the afterglow of sex and high hormones, that he wouldn't mind dating Phil. Anyone would be lucky to date him – he knows that for a fact. Phil would be the most caring and attentive partner in the world. He'd make you soup when you were sick even though he hates soup. He'd buy you chocolates just because he felt you were a bit sad, even though you're a bit sad a lot. And he'd take whatever you had to give, and he wouldn't ask for any more than you offered even though he deserved the sun, the moon, and all of the universe's creations.
So that's why he also knows he can't date Phil. And that, really, he should start putting some distance between them. Phil would see soon that Dan's bad days outnumber his good, and although he has so far managed to keep Phil sheltered away from the worst of it, nobody could love him at his most self-destructive. He'll lose it eventually, and he'll shout and he'll swear and he'll push, and Phil doesn't deserve any of that.
So, yes, Dan should start putting some distance between them.

Summary
Dan is sent to St. Bartholomew’s Academy for Boys after a mental breakdown his family refuses to acknowledge. The school is old, cold, and suffocatingly strict — a place where you’re meant to forget who you are.
Phil, his new roommate, is strange: polite, quiet, and unnervingly calm — almost too calm, as if he’s accepted something about this place that Dan hasn’t. They’re both drawn to each other in the silence, exchanging small acts of kindness and notes hidden beneath the floorboards.

(fun fact: the keep calm and carry on poster was never actually released during the war. they tried to get rid of every copy but then some guy just found one and it became the face of 'blitz spirit' in england)

Daniel Howell has always been fascinated about the horns growing out of his head. He doesn't know exactly when they sprouted, but they've been there for as long as he can remember. He can't pull them off, and it hurts when he pulls on them too hard. He's tried to cover them up with his hair, but no use.
Phil Lester is the coolest guy he knows-- which isn't saying a lot considering he doesn't know a lot of other people. Phil has horns too, but he's not as afraid to show them off.
Dan hopes she'll be as confident as Phil one day.
