Niamh Flannery and Taniel Deloria have known each other all their lives... just not the normal way two kids grow up knowing each other. Niamh unknowingly has the Shine and has been using it to visit the boy who slowly becomes her friend... then maybe something more. They think their paths will never really cross. Niamh lives in Ireland with her parents and baby sister. Taniel lives in Maine with his aunt so whatever they feel... it simply cannot be.
Then after a terrible accident kills their parents Niamh and her younger sister Laoise come to America. They move to Derry, Maine to live with their estranged aunt and everything changes. Some changes are for the better while others... others mean the Flannery sisters will never recover from.

“Well, you didn't think that all it gives me are painful visions and hallucinations, did you?” Hallorann snorted, but he couldn't manage a smile. The claw was still hovering over his pulse.
For a moment, there was complete silence. The only sound was the rush of blood in his ears. As if having made up its mind, It blinked, smiling at him again.
“Didn't think,” It murmured after him, almost dreamily, then loosened its grip on his neck, pulling its claws back. The hand on his chest also stopped its relentless pressure, so Hallorann finally took a deep breath, involuntarily glancing at the clown on his hips. "And what else can you do, i wonder, mm? You know, Dickie, you're the first human with, as you call it, a shining, that I've gotten my hands on..."
It moved again, like excited cats can fidget in place when their owner waves a fluffy toy in front of their eyes. Hallorann clenched his teeth. He didn't like the warmth that movement sent through his body.

"You know that I'm gonna be dead the next time you wake up, right?" Hallorann stated, half-serious, half-joking. He might be dead in twenty-seven years or really old, Dick wasn't giving it much thought. Aging was a part of life and he was in his early forties, he wasn't going to get any younger... The presence finally revealed itself from the shadow from behind his armchair and loomed over the sitting man, air around them thickening. Hallorann was slightly unnerved by the company, but it happened so many times, he almost got used to it. His eyes were glued to the pages, he didn't even notice the clown's expression. The grin was still there, but there was something else in the way the yellow irises looked at him. Sadness? No, not really. Something more like regret and realization.
