On my first day, I was surprised at there not being a whiff of fire and brimstone left in the air, only the scent of the industrial detergent used to scrub blood out of cold concrete floors. However, some stains must have been too tough to kill, unlike the human beings who left them behind. Instead of a yellow brick road, this Merry Old Land of Oz is paved with rust-colored splotches, some only faint, some not so much. Their bodies may have been bleached out of existence, but the specters of Armageddon remain, embalmed with hydrogen peroxide, entombed in cement, still prisoners, always prisoners. This must be why firing squads have fallen out of fashion — the mess left behind after a lethal injection is much easier to clean.
