Summary
After Dante's defeat, and most of the homunculi defeated, well except for Wrath, and probably Gluttony, Edward was nowhere to be seen.
No one knew where or why Edward went missing, well, except for Elio. He knew immediately when he saw that Alphonse got his body back: Edward sacrificed himself to retrieve Alphonse's physical body, and he was likely able to get through the Gate to the other side. With no other choice, Elio sought to get to the other side and bring Edward back home.
But what Elio didn't fully realize was how much he'd have to sacrifice and endure to reach his goal, sacrificing so much to the point...he'd lose himself forever.
