The foundations of his steady life begin to form cracks after a workplace incident that leaves him with a healthy fear of Kaiju he formerly lacked.
Problem: his job hinged on his abnormal composure near Kaiju.
(Damn the government, who lure you into a false sense of security with their incompetence, then attack when you’re least prepared.)

Just before the first Summer’s breath, a beast would arise from the depths of the ocean, and wreak havoc upon Canada, coming to their aid with a Raven’s speed, the events of the monsters destruction would forever change the lives of thousands, the Jaeger academy would be born, training it’s candidates into monster hunters.
These men and women, the Rangers, would become the Hero's of the world, and the inspiration of children al across the Globe, but who were the first of these?“There are certain things you can’t fight, acts of god, you see a hurricane, you get out the way. But when you’re in a Jaeger, suddenly you can fight the hurricane. You can win.

Of course, it only makes sense that Newt would be here too. If Hermann's been tasked with meeting the new recruits for Breach Physics, then Newt must be doing the same for Kaiju Biology. As they've each emerged as experts in their respective fields of study, that would make them the most qualified to conduct the interviews this year. Still, Hermann can't help but feel caught off-guard.
(Or: thanks to a clerical error, Hermann and Newt are forced to spend some time together)

Wilbur Soot ran a two jaeger team to close the rift 5 years ago. The PPDC has been on the defensive ever since. Planning and preparing for new Kaiju worried that their closing the rift will not last forever. But it's been 5 years and now Wilbur doesn't know what to do with himself after his jaeger was destroyed and his co-pilot Schlatt killed.
All he knows is this:
1) He has a new jaeger and a new co-pilot
2) Dream did something all those years ago and he's not so sure it can be hidden or pushed to back of anyone's minds anymore -

They slip in and out of their memories, too fast to really relive them. Shaw won't let herself get distracted. She breathes. Matches her breathing with Cole's. Shaw can't place the emotions she experiences, but she knows they're not hers. She briefly wonders if nightmares feel like this.
OR
Fighting sea monsters in giant robot suits? Shaw's always been the type to answer the call to action, and there's going to be a helluva a lot of action on the Pacific coast, trying to keep the Kaiju at bay. Sharing a headspace with another person though? That'll take some adjusting to.

When one idiot grad student gets himself killed studying Kaiju, the world overreacts immediately and forbids anyone to access Kaiju at all who hasn't first gone through a certification process which is, at present, only available at the Jaeger Academy.
So Newt does the natural thing, and joins the Jaeger Program just long enough to get his certification, with plans to immediately drop out after.
This does not go exactly as planned. Largely because Hermann is there too.
