Keiichiro folded his arms as he tried to recall the conversation in question. "Was it something like …? Ah, something about using the power entrusted to us responsibly?"
She nodded. "Yes. We were trusted with this power to protect the people. If the Lupinrangers really didn't have a choice … if they're being forced into this, or if something's got them so desperate that they truly believe that being a phantom thief is their only option … shouldn't we try to protect them, too?"
Keiichiro blinked and took a step back. That was certainly a new take on the situation.

Umika folded her arms and looked at him with a hint of pity in her eyes. "You really only use first and last names in your contact list?"
He blinked. "What, like a normal person? Yes. Why?"
She shrugged. "I dunno - just wondering where your sense of whimsy is."

Summary
Kairi's life is finally coming back together after his college and career plans have been shattered along with his left ankle. He has a job he likes looking after kids he surprisingly also likes, and coworkers he gets along with. He couldn't ask for anything more. Until he meets Keiichiro.
Keiichiro's life is settling down, now that he and his family are getting used to life in the city. He loves being a mail carrier and a father, and couldn't think of a single thing his life is missing. That's when he meets Kairi.
(Keiichiro and Kairi have a meetcute and then a series of misunderstandings.)

"That's the question, isn't it? ...I wonder, who was Kairi, really? Did anyone really know him?” As soon as he’d said it out loud he realized the mistake he made. One look at Shouri’s face told him he had crossed a line.
“Let’s begin by saying that my brother is not past-tense, officer.” Any trace of friendliness had drained from Shouri’s face and it became clear that the Yano brothers had both the same smile and the same frown. “People do know him, in the present-tense, and just because you weren’t able to see him in entirety doesn’t mean that no one has ever done that. It only means that you couldn’t.”

Kairi runs into a void headfirst and leaves behind a man who cares about him with a lot of questions in search of answers. Keiichiro takes a year trying to piece together who the real Kairi was.
