“I get that you're difficult by nature,” Akuna says, sliding down the wall to sit on the floor of Cal's cell next to him like they're not interrogator and prisoner, but just casual acquaintances hanging out. He cracks open his own bottle of water and takes a sip, then continues, “or Lank wouldn't be losing more of his hair trying to break you. But when I tell you to drink, you gotta drink, Kestis.”
Cal snorts. “What,” he croaks, “I have to get better so you can be the one to break me instead?”
Akuna pauses for a moment, then shrugs and nods. “Pretty much.”

Cal pulls back and touches his face, feels Bode’s cheek flex with a muscle in his jaw. There’s no warmth under his fingertips— he feels something solid there, but it’s not what he should feel like, lacking somehow, it’s not—
“You’re not real,” he cries.
“I’m not alive,” the hallucination corrects him, as if that’s not the same damn thing. The sky above them is nearly black with how many stars have gone out, only the deepest blood red hue of the nebula remaining. Bode’s glow looks so much brighter like this— brighter than an echo. “There’s a difference. You know that.”

You haven’t crumbled yet, haven’t surrendered to despair like so many others. That’s good. It means there’s still fire in you. And fire, when controlled, can forge something far stronger than the brittle ideals of the Jedi. We offer you more than mere chains, Kestis. We offer you purpose, training, and power.”
Cal’s fingers twitched; the lure of power wasn’t really something that interested him. For all the Grand Inquisitors posturing, he clearly knew nothing about him.
Cal only wanted power over himself.
Left reeling from betrayals and fighting, Cal returns to the fortress. Done with being on the back foot, Cal decides that he'll play the Grand Inquisitors game but he is going to do it on his own terms.
