Summary
I’m not falling, Mac recited to himself internally, I was falling, I’m not anymore.
It wasn’t as comforting as he’d hoped it would be. Neither was the knowledge that the piton pulling free was technically it doing its job. It slowed his fall just enough for the next one to catch him. It was the same idea as the design of the rope, stitching meant to fail, meant to allow the rope to stretch to an extra twenty-five percent of its original length. Safety features. Mac had been running the math of it through his head from the moment his fingers grazed the cliffside. It all should’ve been reassuring, but thinking of them just meant Mac was picturing falling over and over again. His stomach flipped, as if it was still resettling. He rested his forehead against the rope.
“Mac?” Finally something pierced the deafening rush of blood through Mac’s temples, Jack’s concerned voice from far below. “I got ya, buddy. You good up there?” -

The world burst apart again, and Mac rolled onto his back with the impact. Or maybe the world rolled onto his back. It was hard to tell, everything was spinning. Even the earth was spinning, insanely fast. Where he was, at around thirty-six degrees of latitude, he was being spun around at about eight-hundred forty miles an hour. Jack had once commented that a speed like that seemed way too fast, like it should be flinging everyone off into space. Mac had scoffed at the time, debating whether to even attempt to explain it to Jack. Now, feeling all those almost quarter-of-a-mile-a-seconds flying by, Mac wished he had. He wished he’d explained everything, until Jack’s brains were leaking out his ears. He wished he’d had the time to. He wished he was still hurtling around the earth with Jack, because now he felt like he was going to fly right off it. -

“Do you have a thermometer anywhere in this house?” Mac asked with a slightly aggrieved tone.
“Can’tcha just whip one up?”
“I’d have to get the mercury from something. Do you have float valves?”
“No.”
“Tooth fillings?”
“Not yet, take a few more punches to the face and I might.”
“A liquid mirror telescope?”
“To look at what? Smog?”
“A barometer?”
“Isn’t that what you’re trynna make?”
Mac paused, opened his mouth, and then saw Jack’s shit-eating grin and realized his partner was just screwing with him.
“Then no.” Mac huffed, looking back down at his report. “I can’t ‘whip you up’ a thermometer.”
“Shame.” Jack turned back to the TV. He didn’t sound particularly bothered.
Mac drummed his pen against the couch, the sound muffled. “…but you feel alright?”
Jack paused the movie this time, and the sudden absence of the action-movie chaotic soundtrack was blunt. Jack twisted to angle towards Mac fully, bracing his elbows on his knees and giving Mac both his full attention and a tolerant but slightly bewildered smile.
“I’m ok, Mac.” Jack reiterated slowly and warmly. “I appreciate the concern, but it’s just a cold. It’s not gonna kill me.” -

Jack lifted his hand, pressing the end of Mac’s multitool against his forehead. The burning heat of it was painful, but he wanted to feel it. Wanted to feel every bit of the heat that had took Mac from him. The heat that should have taken him too. “He’s dead.”***
The Organization has been relentless in their attempts to kill Macgyver. During one such attempt, Mac makes a spur of the moment choice to fake his own death to keep his friends out of danger. This leaves his friends grappling with the loss, and gives himself the opportunity to help take out the Organization as an undercover agent.

What was supposed to be a standard extraction mission in the Arizona desert goes sideways fast when the Phoenix team’s convoy is ambushed by an unidentified paramilitary group with high-grade weapons and insider intel. MacGyver, Desi, and Riley are forced off-road into rough canyon terrain, but during the firefight, Mac takes a shot to the upper thigh—an arterial hit.
Bleeding out in minutes, they’re forced to take refuge in an abandoned trailer miles from any hospital. No signal. No evac. And no time.
The problem? Riley’s panicking. Desi’s injured too—dislocated shoulder. That leaves Mac to guide them through a makeshift arterial clamp and field surgery on himself. With adrenaline and pain clouding his thoughts, he walks Riley through a brutal, improvised procedure using what’s available: fishing wire, a camping stove, pliers, and a phone camera to reflect the wound.

Summary
Mac would kick himself later. He was too preoccupied feeling pissy, too distracted running through anything that might have made him stand out to be called for a pat-down, and too wrapped up in a civilian mindset that he noticed just a little too slow.
The TSO’s eyes flickering to the side as they entered the room. The fact he didn’t have any gloves on. The barrel of a gun landing against Mac’s temple the moment the door clicked shut behind him.
“Hello, Macgyver.” A sing-song voice called, sounding giddily pleased with himself.
Mac’s blood went cold, far more from the voice than from the gun.//
