Randy almost doesn’t understand how it happened, even though he’s the one who started it. Three weeks ago he’d never had sex with anyone, had never thought about doing it with a guy, didn’t think much about doing it at all. And maybe that means there’s something wrong with him, but he’s not stupid—he understands that Benson is into him. And if Randy can use that to keep him calm, keep them on track for a little while, maybe Benson will come back to himself. Will shake off the shock, and tell Randy what the plan is.

A voice in the back of his head warned him. The moment he turned around, that’s when it would happen.
“And you’ll be careful, won’t you?” His mother asked, insistent, her voice still hitting his ears wrong.
He couldn’t shake the feeling that somehow the outside had gotten in. That the sprawling prairie had found its way into his house and was just creeping out of sight holding a twelve-gauge shotgun, held back only by the light of the TV and his fanatical belief that so long as he was waiting for it, nothing bad would come.
“Of course I will.” He answered.
Her sigh cut through the phone, a marker of relief.
“Good, we’ll be home in the morning,” she said, the tension in her voice he must have mistaken for something alien gone as suddenly as he’d noticed it, “Just…”
Then the phone crackled in his ear loudly, and he moved the receiver further away on instinct. The sharpness of the sound so sudden that it made him look away from the point his gaze had been fixed, back in the direction of the TV.
“...No more falling asleep in the bathtub, Randy.”
