Perhaps then, it can be said that Sumeragi Subaru did finally achieve his dream of being a zookeeper. After all, one needs a zookeeper for all the animals within Tokyo’s urban jungle.
And because the zookeeper Sumeragi Subaru exists, so does his veterinary counterpart, Sakurazuka Seishirou. They are not so different, except the duties of a veterinarian also include putting the animals down.
An interlude: a pause between acts of a play.
Takes place after the end TB and before the start of X.Seishirou and Subaru navigate Tokyo in the years between winter 1997 - start 1999.
Continues from Annex: Snow-Catcher but can be read stand-alone.

Seishirou has never thought about the meaning of his life. He exists for his duty, and nothing else. Even his name, Sakurazuka, is tied to his occupation, Sakurazukamori. A Sakurazukamori is created and bred to kill. He is fated to die, fated to be replaced, fated to be forgotten. From the moment Seishirou was conceived in his mother’s womb, his soul was already fated to be consumed, buried together with his victims, underneath the very cherry blossoms that give him power.
It doesn’t bother him, this cumbersome fate, and he’s never questioned it. It seems only right and fitting that a Sakurazukamori disappears back to the barrow, just as his mother and all his predecessors did. As for his soul, Seishirou isn’t attached to it either— he simply exists. He thinks of himself as a breathing body, experiencing a life he doesn’t have a choice in, and is indifferent to the rest.
One night in Tokyo, one final soliloquy.

Loving was easy.Being loved – not so much.
Later, when he kissed Subaru breathless, Seishiro was trying to memorize every part of it, every detail of them being together. He thought about onmyodo, and wondered if there was any magic that could keep them here forever, any ofuda that would pause them – young, in love, no end of the world looming over their heads, no people to save over and over.

Looking good in front of a camera was one thing, but looking happy— well, that took skill. David Matthews was obviously a professional diplomat. Ergo, like recognized like, birds of a feather and all, or so to say, Seishirou knew the power of a well-practiced smile.
Pity about that smile. Seishirou walked past the cordoned-off tape, careful not to disturb the scene. David Matthews was definitely not smiling now.
In fact, it was hard to tell where his face was. David Matthews had been so brutally murdered, that the cleaning maid who had found his body in the morning screamed herself silly and nearly fainted from her own hysterics. Seishirou had no such qualms. Blood, corpses, bodies, none of it bothered him. Still, he was rather glad that he had worn his second-best pair of leather shoes.
July 1999, set after X-12/Ikebukuro. Seishirou and Subaru are tasked to investigate the murder of an American diplomat.
