“Mason!” Pope shouts into the man’s face in an attempt to get him to snap out of it.
Mason shows no sign of registering Pope’s presence.
“Professor!” Pope yells even louder this time, slapping Mason hard across the cheek.
The man shrinks back and whimpers. The sound is so shocking coming out of Tom Mason’s mouth, Pope flinches like he’s the one who got slapped.

Rebecca has been in remission for just shy of six months when the headaches begin.
They start quietly. Subtle to the point of negligibility. A barely-there tightening of the lines around Tom's eyes when he looks at her, a deeper furrow in his brow when he studies, a rough edge to his voice when he reads to the boys before tucking them in. He smiles and tells her he's fine, he's just been studying too much. Been burning the candle at both ends in order to study and work and still spend time with the boys.
And he has.
So she believes him.
She believes him until she can't any longer.

It's Hal who finds him, semi-conscious and writhing weakly, chest spasming against the vacuum of his desperate, broken breaths, fingers clawing at the concrete as if finding impossible purchase will somehow offer impossible relief. By the time Hal's cries for help are acknowledged, his breaths have faded to empty rasps, and his father's lips are tinged with blue, his meager grasp on consciousness long gone, his fingers curled loose in defeat.

“Holy shit, Cambridge,” Pope murmurs, drawing the words out as his fingers trail along the bulge in Tom’s pants. “You know, I suspected you’d be a kinky fucker behind closed doors, but I gotta say, I couldn’t have predicted this one coming.” He presses his palm flat against Tom’s abdomen, and his sweat burns against the open wound. “Soundly beats out my expectations. Congratulations.”
Tom gets caught in the gut by a Skitter on patrol, which leads to him catching Pope up after hours.

Tom stiffens, fingers clenching in the sides of Anne’s shirt as he pushes away, looks up at her. His eyes burn with the intensity of his stare as he takes her in, searching for discrepancies, afraid to look too closely in case he finds them.
Her brow crumples in concern, hands coming up to cup his face again, this time with all the tender caution of one reaching out to a wild animal. “Tom?”
His breath hitches; he swallows. Stares. “Anne, are you—” even to his own ears, his voice has all the self-assurance of a child waking up from a nightmare, “—are you real?”
