When Buddy and Violet are kidnapped by Ex-Libris, it's up to Chase and Deacon to find the two and rescue them. Their only clue to the keys' location is an island located near Europe. Chase and Deacon turn to research, history, and their lineage for clues and begin to slowly unravel the dark origins of Ex-Libris.

The Crystal Slope competitions are the final preliminary rounds before contestants are chosen to proceed to nationals! The only difference in this competition is that the event coordinators thought it would be a good idea for each competitor to have their own "rival" in each round. “Hey, don’t blame me. You’re the one that brought me up here,” Chase says, ignoring Nox’s surprised spluttering, “what? No I didn’t? You’re the one—”“The key is—was?—me? Honestly, I’m not even sure myself,” Chase continues, words slowly fading into the background as he continues to ramble, “I can remember everything beforehand fine, but after the witch did her magic or whatever, everything is a little fuzzy and honestly it’s been so long since anyone has been able to see me, I’m just happy talking to someone again,” he goes, not realising Nox has long stopped listening.
The key that Nox had barely thought twice about; it’s unknown magic that he’d unthinkingly taken into his own, to be absorbed when he had barely an understanding to the spell that was woven into the very fabric of the key’s construct, having thought it nothing more than tangled weave.
Or: Nox meets Chase, a spirit echo once inhabiting a key.
