For the past five seasons, Rumi has taken this trip with the intent of helping her adopted mother tend to her flock of sheep. The usual rotation of ranch hands were unreliable during the summer as most of them migrated into the city to make and save up more money that'll get them through the winter. Rumi, meanwhile, made a point of doing the opposite, and she was far better off for it, or so she thought.

Summary
Rumi went missing for a month.
She's gone off the grid plenty of times before. At the start of every summer, she would stay at her family estate in the mountains. A mental reset, she called it—just some time away from the noise of the city and university life. But she'd never been gone for longer than two weeks. At least, not without at least telling someone.
Zoey replayed every conversation she had with Rumi leading up to the retreat, anything she could possibly think to remember that gave some kind of indication that this was planned all along. It didn't help either that every attempt to call Rumi's phone those first days of realizing that something was wrong—so very wrong—would be left to ring and ring and ring. Any attempts made after that went straight to voicemail.

"Was that—?" Zoey's eyebrows raised before her eyes narrowed, a smirk on her face. "Oh, Rumi. You liked that, didn't you?"
"N-no, I didn't…" Rumi scrambled backwards clumsily, all the grace and poise of a hunter—of their leader seemingly lost in her embarrassment. "I don't know why I—it's not, I didn't meant to," she stammered.
"Didn't mean to what, baby?" Zoey cooed, her fingers cool against Rumi's heated cheek. "Didn't mean to be good for me?"
A soft, airy whine escaped from Rumi's throat.

Mira and Zoey teach Rumi that she doesn't have to offer anything to be loved. She doesn't have to do anything, be anything, or be perfect. All she has to do is her best; all she has to do is be good.

Summary
If she spoke she'd end up shouting—arguing with a talkshow host was more trouble than it was worth—and if she walked off she'd be leaving a mess for someone else to clean. Giving in simply wasn't an option worth considering.
She did what she always did when she was so thoroughly trapped. Her eyes flicked over to Rumi and Zoey.
It made her feel small and meek.
It's hard to accept protection when you've always been the protector.
