Nothing's off, everything's as it should be, but there's this niggling feeling in Danny's chest, right about where Steve cut into him to save his life, that there's something... he doesn't know. Not missing. Not exactly. Not wrong, either. It's just... something. Some infinitesimal difference. It's driving him nuts.
But it's about Steve, so Danny's confident he'll figure it out.

"What's wrong, buddy?" Danny asked, all soft concern. He gently pushed Charlie's fine blond hair away from his forehead in a move Steve had watched countless times over the past six years. It was a move designed both to comfort and to check for elevated temperature, and every damn time, Steve felt that pang of helpless envy. And how fucked up was that?
Steve desperately needs some comfort, but has no idea how to ask for it. Lucky for him, he doesn't need to.

The mall is in flames, vomiting greasy smoke and the smell of burning plastic. Steam from the firemen's hoses drifts thick through the air. Steve stares at the fire, his expression so openly forlorn that Lou aches for him.
They find Danny's car on one of the lower parking decks.
They don't find Danny.
Just another of those oh-noes-he's-dead-wait-he-isn't stories because I've only written that particular trope a dozen times so far.
