Most days, Dennis would say he didn’t believe in God if anyone had asked. Still, Dennis Whitaker couldn’t help but believe in God when he saw his mother being ushered to Central 9 in the Pitt. Not the benevolent God that he’d seen reflected in his studies, but the vicious, unforgiving God that he had been raised with. The God who would punish Dennis for daring to live in sin. There was no running from the Lord’s vengeance– his family had taught him so.
Dennis ran anyway.

“Hawks, are you okay?” A small frown seemed to tug at the corners of Dabi’s lips.
“Does it matter?” Hawks replied quickly, brow furrowing. He didn’t matter here, Dabi did. It was about him feeling good, not Hawks.
“Why— Hawks, of course it matters,” Hawks had never heard Dabi’s voice so soft, so uncertain, as when he spoke next. “Why wouldn’t it matter, birdie?”
“It never has before.”
Hawks was prepared for a lot of things— disgust, laughter, for them to just resume— but for some reason, he hadn’t been prepared for the sharp inhale from Dabi.

Waking up in Alhaitham’s arms felt more familiar on the third day. By the fourth, it was fully expected and, by the fifth, he found himself snuggling into those warm arms and sometimes smiling at the “Good morning, sweetheart,” before reminding himself of the situation and sitting down a very confused Alhaitham for a very confusing conversation. Just as Lyney was about to make another flirty remark at the gesture, he was rendered shut-up by Aether bowing to place a kiss to his left hand, looking up at him shyly as his lips lingered on his knuckles.
Lyney’s lips parted in surprise. He couldn’t say anything; or, he didn’t try to, because if he did, it wouldn’t even be coherent.
“I hope you like it,” Aether gave him that shy smile that he absolutely relished every time he was given the honor of seeing it, and he supposed the butterflies in his stomach wanted to see it too, because they were clearly trying to break out.
Or: A certain Steambird journalist catches photos of the beginning of the traveler’s efforts to woo Fontaine’s great magician. With the help of said magician’s twin sister, she continues to follow along Aether’s ‘courting process’ to the start of a papers-defying relationship.
OR: A traveler, a magician, and their persistent (and comically dense) attempts to pursue each other, tailed by a stealthy stagehand and a story-seeking journalist who may or may not be developing feelings of their own…
