His eyes drift to the closest wall, something about it was off, as he begins to get closer he swears it looks almost as if it were moving….
Curiosity ultimately wins out over fear and he slowly tilts his head towards the source of the breath only to be met with two enormous serpentine eyes.
Eyes already looking down at him, heat smoldering in their brown depths like fresh coals.
Just watching.
It *was* a dragon and it was watching him, waiting for him to realize he was there.
All the air leaves his lungs in a rush, it should have been a scream, would have been a scream if he’d still been in possession of his voice. Instead his heart was pounding against the inside of his ribs so fast that his limbs felt numb and his skin too tight, a sense of utter fear and awe rooting him to the spot.

Lieutenant Beard carried letters from a man named Jacket, a fellow soldier unfortunately stricken by muteness. They were not love letters, but Lieutenant Beard was hoping, so he kept them folded in plastic at the bottom of his rucksack. In the late afternoon, after a day's march, he would dig his foxhole, wash his hands under a canteen, unwrap the letters, hold them with the tips of his fingers, and spend the last hour of light pretending. He would imagine romantic camping trips into the White Mountains in New Hampshire. He would sometimes taste the envelope flaps, knowing his tongue had been there. More than anything, he wanted Jacket to love him as he loved him, but the letters were mostly chatty, elusive on the matter of love.
