    Summary

Deirta Thelyss may not have been of den Kryn, but she was about as close as one could get without climbing back into the Luxon and trying again. She had been consecuted eight hundred years ago, and was nearly as old as Leylas herself, or so they say. The Light had shone upon her and granted her, finally, two children - her golden boy, Verin, and her silver moon child, Essek. Both she loved, in her own way - though, Essek mused as he traced the gilded lettering of his dinner invitation, it was a peculiar sort of love. He couldn’t help feeling there was something missing in the flinch behind his mother’s eyes when she looked at him, how she rose to the occasion in public but did everything she could to pretend he was a ghost behind closed doors.

The invitation was gilded in gold. I understand the hint, Mother.

    Summary

A problem shaped like seven unexpected mercenaries carrying one of the priceless artifacts he stole arrives on Essek's doorstep, but he can handle it. Is handling it. Will be able to handle it, at some point, if he can figure out how to avoid them killing him first.

    Summary

Falsely accused of conducting espionage against the Dynasty on the orders of Trent Ikithon, Caleb is imprisoned in the Dungeon of Penance. The evidence against him is compelling, and it quickly becomes apparent that the distinction between "active scourger" and "almost scourger" will not be enough to save him. Caleb can only endure.

Caught between duty and friendship, Essek can do nothing to prevent Caleb from being tortured for information that he may not even possess. Essek can only watch, and hope that he has an opportunity to ease at least some of his friend's suffering.

Each chapter fills one of the daily prompts from the "April is the Cruellest Month" challenge.

    Summary

Essek wanted to escape a snare of his own making and wrench Aeor's arcane secrets from the city's depths. But suddenly he finds himself at a literal loss for words, entrapped in an anti-magic field with a treasure trove of ancient magic and a fascinating stranger - a human hedge wizard, Caleb Widogast, who he cannot stop thinking about.

    Summary

If Essek were to kill Caleb, he would do it with a spell.

None of the intimate agony of feeling the last flutters of his heart with his own skin. He cannot even afford himself the painful honesty of knowing that if he were to do it, it would be impersonal and practiced, something Essek has done to many before and will do to many others. This knowledge is not enough to stop him imagining it.

In the months following the events of Cognouza and the Somnovem, Essek fails to come to terms with the fact that he is a dangerous man.
