“Well…” Durin lowered his voice. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust Hat Guy — far from it, the scholar was one of his closest companions — but this felt more… personal to him and Albedo. “I guess I’m wondering what Durin was like. You know. The one before me.”

It was only for the briefest of moments, but Durin caught the way Albedo’s eyes narrowed. Then he sighed and patted the ground next to him. “Sit.”

the celebration of durin’s newly-achieved permanence is cut short by a freak avalanche that traps the little dragon and his brothers in albedo’s mountain camp with no way to contact the outside world or find out if help is coming.

meanwhile, durin starts having strange dreams, albedo grows more distant by the day, and hat guy is threatening an international incident.

“...i keep wondering what would’ve happened if i hadn’t gotten you away from dottore when those souls started dragging him back.”

both boys frowned, aether’s expression twisting once again into something incredibly melancholic.

“there’s no way to know,” aether started, not looking at nari. “maybe i would’ve survived anyways. maybe i would’ve been lost to time, but that’s not important because none of it happened.”

he paused for a moment before nari felt warmth over his hand, looking down to see aether had gently placed his hand over nari’s.

“and it’s all thanks to you. i’m alive because of you, nari.”

    To want is to live.
It was the only real truth that the Wanderer had ever known.

“Usually, when someone asks you something it’s polite to ask the question back.”
The Wanderer made sure his scowl was properly seen before snapping, “And when have you known me to care about something like that?”
For some reason, the Traveler laughed. It was still soft and nearly-hollow, but it was more emotion than he’d shown all day.
    Again, again, again.
The Wanderer had gotten very good at ignoring his own thoughts.
“Good point.” The Traveler stretched, arms held high and yawn loud. Which was stupid. There were several weak points that could be exploited like that, especially with the smooth expanse of his skin on display. The Wanderer looked away to scowl up at the setting sun. “Mine is the color of your eyes, by the way.”

    Summary

Too many thoughts raced through his mind, constantly scratching the surface of his thoughts with a dark web of insecurities, slowly enveloping his mind.

What if it took them too long to defeat Dottore? What if his core somehow shattered? What if it rebooted?

What if he never woke up?

So many things could go wrong…

“Durin,” Aether’s voice was calm and peaceful, as if instead of comforting a friend, he were whispering a sincere and genuine truth to the world, “he… he can be many things. Sometimes he’s rude, sometimes he’s sharp, sometimes he’s impatient… but he’s also strong, and I assure you, he’s more resilient than you can imagine.”

Durin’s eyes flickered, taking in Aether’s gentle smile before he smiled back. It was weak, small, and fragile, trembling on the verge of collapse, but a smile nonetheless.

"Yes, you're... you're right," he agreed seriously, his dragon tail now moving more animatedly. "Hat Guy won't give up, and if he has any trouble... I'll help him, just like he always does for me. We're best friends, after all."

    Or

Durin takes his role of protecting Scaramouche very seriously while waiting for him to wake up.
