Bookmarker's Notes
" “I don’t go back anymore.”
Ilya feels something unravel at the idea of being able to say, ‘yes, same,’ to someone who knows what it means. The leaving. The leaving there and the staying here. The choosing of it. The way it fractures such simple things, like the word home, and stitches them back together at the same time. "
This is like, THE fic, that i wanted to read since a first understood that ilya's russian. It's everything. The queer studies, the angst of being cancelled for homophobia while being queer yourself, the Russia thing of it all, and it being explain and really talked about and acknowledge for once, not just put as 'it's Russia'. The bond between queer people, the finaly being understood without needing to explain. Putting words onto stuff that you lived.
And all of it is warm. What a fucking godblessing work

Summary
She fucks him once, and then again three weeks later, both times in the big bed in his West End condo, with its black walls and backlit mirrors. It’s good, or the sex is good, the during, and the afterwards too, when Ilya clicks open a little of his lockbox puzzle self and talks idly about hockey, or asks her questions about the bruises on her shins. The before is — fine. The same five minute little performance that comes before every hook-up, a game she’s not sure either of them can quite believe they’re bothering to play.
--
In 2010, a couple of months after Shane and Ilya first fuck, Rose looks across a dancefloor in Boston and sees Ilya looking back. Somewhere along the way, they become friends.
