    Summary

“Why are you a deer, Alastor?” Charlie asks, swinging her legs.

He stiffens, then cocks his head at her, “Why, what a personal question, my dear! Surely you know it’s insensitive to ask a sinner about their form?”

She gives him an apologetic smile, but not much more, “Sorry, I just… I heard that your human lives, and, well, deaths, influenced you here. So…”

“Yeah, so… do ya have, like, a mating season?” Angel Dust cuts in with a purr, sticking his head through the door suddenly, “I heard deer do that and I gotta say, I approve.”

Alastor simply gives a short laugh, and pushes him out with an inky tendril.

Or, 5 times the crew ask about Alastor’s deer characteristics, and the one time they get an answer.

    Summary

“I think I’m in love with you.”

The radio sputters, silencing Ella Fitzgerald with a harsh crunch of discordant static. For a long moment, the silence is deafening.

Heart pounding, Lucifer dares to peek through his fingers.

Alastor is staring at him mutely. His crimson eyes are blown wide, grin frozen in a rictus of astonishment; every inch of him thrums with newfound tension, radiating sickening discomfort in a way that would be palpably obvious even if he wasn’t also emitting a faint, shrill whine of feedback through the airwaves.

    Then, very faintly: “No.”

Or: Lucifer has never been very good at recognizing his own feelings. Unluckily for him, Alastor knows exactly how he feels about the L word. Also, soup.

    Summary

The hesitation worms into Alastor’s throat and coils around his esophagus, a heavy, breathless weight locked behind his teeth, and he briefly closes his eyes to focus on swallowing around it. Static trickles like water.

Weakness. It’s weakness. A bright shimmer like heat lightning wicks against his eyelids, silver and nauseating, a flash of steel plunging into a warm, gasping body like sheathing a sword, a knife, a rung more intimate than a gun but he still regrets that he didn’t do it with his hands—but the blood ran down his wrists in thick rivulets and stained his shoes all the same, so what does it matter, he asks, what the hell does it matter if he avoids the corpse upstairs when it will still be there in the cold morning, hollow and waiting?

“Come see me tonight,” Vox says.

Or: Vox is dead. Still—Alastor is not so lucky to be rid of him yet.

“May I ask what you’re trying to make me do?” Alastor inquired politely.

“Sing ‘Yankee Doodle’,” Vox said, not breaking eye contact. “Evidently it isn’t working.”

“Oh, I think I almost felt something.”

    “Really?”

Alastor blinked a few times, a little enamored with the burning afterimages of Vox’s glowing features impressed onto the backs of his eyelids. “Never mind. Just a bit of a headache from how long this exercise has been dragging on.”

Or: What's a little consensual hypnotism between friends?

    Summary

There, sitting on the edge of Alastor's bed, legs lazily crossed with one hand splayed out behind him, is Lucifer. His expression is strangely inscrutable, and Alastor despises the way it crawls down over him, taking in every loathsome detail of the humiliating state he's found himself in.

"Get out," he rasps—because there's no use asking how he got in. There probably isn't a single place in Hell that could keep Lucifer out if he put his mind to it. "Or are you enjoying the view that much?"

"Honestly?" Though Lucifer does not exactly smile, a dark shadow of amusement dances across his face before being replaced by something more resigned, almost disappointed. "Not as much as I thought I would. It's kind of pathetic, actually."

Alastor hadn't wanted anyone to see him like this, least of all Lucifer.
