Life in Eden, by: WitchOfEndor. The summary makes this seem like a very serious story when it is in fact hilarious. Azula is fantastic in this and the Fire Sibling dynamic is also fantastic, 10/10, no notes.

AU where Zuko realises early into his banishment that Ozai is an abusive bastard who sent him on a wild goose chase. Iroh turns their decommissioned warship into a floating tea shop, and Zuko settles down as a tea server onboard the Jasmine Dragon.
And then, years later, the Avatar emerges from the iceberg.
And then Aang decides that he wants Zuko, the first good firebender he’s met this century, to be his firebending teacher - even though Zuko wants nothing to do with him.

lessons in tea making, by: aloneintherain. With the notes, this story feels complete. Zuko and the Gaang bonding much earlier through friendly kidnapping is adorable, but my favorite parts of this story were Zuko interacting with other royalty. He and Yue have a really interesting relationship, and so do he and Kuei. Other highlights include Yue being totally awesome, and Zuko paying it forward and trying to counsel Jet the way Iroh once counseled him.

Towards the Sun, by: MuffinLance. This is distinctly a two part story, with Ch 1-18 being the first part. Zuko's tenure as Fire Lord is full of tension and heartbreak, and a cast of interesting original characters. This part especially, but the story overall, have a really interesting take on Iroh, taking a hard look at how much Zuko and the world would trust him as Fire Lord given who he is. Second part is Azula's life-changing field trip, also known as Zuko mostly-accidentally starting a civil war, and is full of interesting character interactions, especially with Song, the colonies, and the North.

Embers, by: Vathara. This was the first Avatar fic I ever read. Zuko's the main character, but many, many characters get a turn in the spotlight. I particularly enjoyed this interpretation of Toph and Sokka, of the main canon characters. There are also a lot of really interesting original characters: Shidan, Shirong, Hitomi, Amaya, Shirong, Temul, Gyate... to name just a few :). There is a lot of worldbuilding in this, around the cultural differences between the different nations, the nature of war in general and how this particular one came about, and spirits and the Avatar cycle, often with author's notes pointing to real-world references. Watching all the lost history unfold is a fascinating journey even on re-read, especially about past Avatars. It's quite long, obviously, but I've read it multiple times, happily.

While Mighty Oaks Do Fall, by: WitchofEndor. I am obsessed with this story. It does an amazing job portraying autistic Zuko and an amazing job with worldbuilding around spiritual traditions and legal practices in the different nations and it is all extremely fascinating. There are battles won with contract law and there's a formal legal proceeding with actual rules of procedure, it's great. I enjoyed the Fire Sage Original Characters, especially Izumi. Mind the content warning in Chapter 15, it's earned.

Mountains and Badgermolehills, by: Glass_Onion. This was a really excellent ensemble story, Zuko and Sokka and Katara and Aang all get their individual moments to shine and they have moments with each other that feel really meaningful and in-character. And the side characters also got to have interesting dialogue and moments with the main characters, Yue and Iroh (unsurprisingly) and Pakku and Zhao (surprisingly). It's funny and heartwarming and heartbreaking and despite speedrunning Zuko's redemption arc doesn't feel rushed at all, giving it plenty of time to breathe and wrapping up the character and plot threads neatly.

When Azula is nine, she becomes an only child. She hears the Fire Lord call for Zuko's life, and in the morning, her mother and brother are gone. Azula may be young, but she isn't naive. She knows what happened to them.
Which makes it all the more surprising when Azula tracks the Avatar down and fights his group of peasant friends, only to find herself staring into an eerily familiar face.

where the stars do not take sides, by: WitchofEndor. I love Azula in this, I love Zuko in this, and I love Azula and Zuko's--as the author puts it--fucked up but wholesome dynamic. The two of them individually and together are a sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes hilarious delight, and I also enjoyed Hakoda dropping into the story briefly to effortlessly win the '#1 Adult' contest that Ozai clearly never even bothered to show up for.

Dead Man's Pointy Shoes, by: inexplicifics. Vesemir dies and wakes up as Stregobor, ten years before the Sack. This should sound ridiculous and weird but it's so cleverly done that it's not even a little bit of either, and Vesemir is handily fixing everything for witchers and Black Sun girls alike, it's very satisfying. A/N as to Stregobor's fate, also very satisfying :)

A Lamp In Darkness, by: inexplicifics. The fairy tale/poetic style of this works really well, I loved this as a one-shot and also could have read 100K of it, it sets up such a fascinating world so efficiently. Also there's a language shift involved in waking the Last Witcher from his enchanted speech and I love language barriers/shifts <3

Three Silvers (Priceless), by: inexplicifics. An AU where Lambert is never a witcher, and it's such an interesting take. Love seeing human Lambert learn to be helpful and the Path and find a place he's happy and thriving, and Eskel finding someone to (aggressively and profanely) care for him, and Lambert accepting Vesemir in a parental role in a way he couldn't with the whole witcher trainee business between them... this was a delight. Also, brief, off-screen appearance of Jaskier was *hilarious*

Rock Bottom, Looking Up, by: inexplicifics. There's little I dread more than the 'Fix-it of Sort' tag. This was just a whole emotional rollercoaster of bracing myself for what I knew was coming and then Voltehre knew a way to get the kids out and all the adult Witchers fighting so fiercely to buy him time for his plan... intense and likely to leave you in tears but totally worth it.

Hickory Dickory Dock, by: inexplicifics. Trying to break a curse is always an intriguing plot, and there's little hints of worldbuilding backstory that make me want to know more. And between the poignant descriptions of the tragedy of Geralt and Eskel's situation and the portrayal of Jaskier as so clever and dedicated, I was hooked.

Two Hearts, One Soul, Many Knives, by: inexplicifics. It's quite short but the little worldbuilding teases are intriguing and interesting, and the mentioned drift partners are full of promise, and Cedric and Axel are beautiful together, there's so much intensity to their relationship packed into just a few sentences.

The War of Silver and Ash, by: astolat. Of astolat's Emhyr/Geralt fics, I find this one to be a mirror of Incomplete. This is also one where Geralt accepts Emhyr's authority, but because he wrote a book and realized a war was coming and turned to the only person he thought had a chance of saving humanity. They are very much working together here, their dynamic is very equal, and what they can accomplish is astonishing. The line about the golden palaces lives rent free in my head.

Of astolat's Emhyr/Geralt fic, this one is very much about two people forced into a reluctant retirement who are really, extremely bored, and go on unwise quests and nearly get canonized and/or married to a Duchess. It's fantastic. Also, Geralt does the pursuing this time which is an interesting take.
