Tommy sighs, settling into the covers of his bed. Why did he have to wake up this early? The Crafts probably haven’t even started anything yet.
He just wants to sleep through it all, just so he doesn’t have to hear them have fun without him.
He can hear the different voices of his foster family talking amongst themselves. Tommy can’t make out any details, but one sentence stands out, repeated many times.
“Merry Christmas.”
Tommy sinks further into the mattress and tries to ignore the loneliness threatening to consume him.
For a foster kid like Tommy, Christmas is always a lonely time for him. He expects this year to be the same, but the Crafts have different plans

"I hate you." Tommy croaks, rubbing at his eyes to clear his vision. Wilbur chuckles, stepping closer to pull Tommy into a hug.
"You can sleep in the car, sunshine." He promises, kissing the crown of his head. "I'm holding you to that." Tommy yawns, pulling away to stretch his arms above his head.
Wilbur rolls his eyes, fond.

“I can’t tell you who it is but I need you to tutor me, so I can tutor them.” Tommy meets Phil’s eyes for a second before they nervously dart away and stay firmly connected to the whiteboard behind Phil.
Tommy swallows hard. “Please, Mr Watson?”
It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that there is no friend.
