HLV, had it hewed closer to the original ACD story “The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton”:
Sherlock took a long, deep breath, scenting the air. “Claire de la Lune. Why do I know it?”
“That’s Mary’s.”
“Not Mary, somebody else.”
They continued creeping up the stairs. Halfway up, they could hear Magnussen, talking soft and fast. Even without being able to make out words, they could hear the desperation in his voice.
Then came the gunshot.
Quickly and cautiously, the men sped up the stairs and eased around a corner to where they had a clear view of the main room of the penthouse. Magnussen was clearly dead, blood and brains spattered on the carpet. As he knew he would, Sherlock saw a petite woman bending over him, blond wisps escaping her knit cap. With a soft exhalation of triumph, she fished the newsman’s keys out of his pocket.
Sherlock put his lips right up against John’s ear and breathed, “Lady Smallwood.”
Suddenly, John stiffened in shock. “No,” he whispered. Sherlock looked to see what had surprised him so, and was himself stunned into silence. For when the female assassin straightened up, her reflection was clearly visible in the window.

I stood as Sherlock entered my office at the Diogenes Club. It had been six months since his precognitive Experience, but the marks of the trauma were all too clear.
"How goes the therapy?" I asked. "Does this visit mean you've forgiven me?"
"Forgiven?" he echoed. He fumbled for a cigarette to buy time. "Mycroft, I understand it was never your intent to cause me harm, but that Experience..." He trembled slightly, taking a long drag. "I remember you saying as the effect dissipates, it shifts to the unconscious mind, producing dreamlike ... or in my case, nightmarish... imagery. I need your help to sort it out."Of course, I would help him any way I could.

Sherlock stared nervously at the envelope in his brother's hand. "Is that my pardon?"
Mycroft pursed his lips. "It's more the procedure you have to go through to earn your pardon. There are conditions."
"And I'm not going to like them," the younger brother deduced. He paled suddenly. "Not the mission?"
"No," Mycroft pronounced firmly. "No mission, no gaol."
"Well, so far I love it," Sherlock snarked. "What's the catch?"
The elder Holmes visibly braced himself. "Psychiatric treatment."Of course, in between therapy sessions, Sherlock will have to quite literally save the world.
