Summary
“I used to ask Judge every day what I did to deserve this,” King thunders. “Do you know what he finally told me?!”
Sanji’s chest wracks with something dangerously close to a sob. “He said it’s because you were born!”
And despite all his grace, King stumbles –– like an angel cast out of heaven, taking his first wobbly steps on mortal ground. It’s clear he thought the question was rhetorical from the way he wavers, “How did you know that?” like he hadn’t even expected an answer, let alone the right one.
Sanji tries to respond, but he looks at King and sees a twisted science experiment, and sees––god, fuck, himself. Sees a man who spent his childhood strapped to a surgical table, and it was the closest thing he had to being held.
This is it. He has nothing left to hide. Sanji reaches a precious hand into the Pandora’s box inside his soul and rips it open, lets the ruins fly.
“Because he said the same thing to me!”
---------
In an alternate universe, King fights Sanji instead of Zoro during the Raid on Onigashima. There, they discover how true the phrase 'I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy' can really be.

“What makes someone human? Is it emotions? Is it agency? Is it the ability to forge connections, to make bonds with others? Is it to seek happiness, to search for meaning in life?
Maybe to be human is to be vulnerable: to be fallible, to have the capacity to fuck up, cause problems, and make mistakes. To be human is to be confused, to be lost, to someday find your way. To be human is to laugh so hard you can't even breathe, to stay up talking to your precious people far past your bedtime. To be human is to strive for something, to go on adventures and seek out your dreams.”
okay guys ouch

Summary
Here's how Leo sees it.
There are levels to innocence, or whatever, different ways of categorizing it — attribute them to different stages of life, maybe. And being locked in a prison dimension with a squishy pink alien bastard who has a very big grudge against you, with all the means and all the time in the universe to exact vengeance on you, means that inevitably: through the medium of spilled guts and the existential horror of eternity, you're going to lose some of that innocence. Have it clawed out, inch by inch of bloodied scales, mile by mile of empty black space.
(It's whatever, okay? Leo knew what he was doing when he threw himself in there, really, he did, he just… never really thought he'd have to reckon with its consequences in a tangible reality.)
or: for leo, it's a jupiter jim movie marathon that unravels him entirely.

Summary
Lo’ak’s eyes lift. “Promise?”
Jake lifts his pinky. “Pinky promise.”
Lo’ak’s smaller pinky wraps around it, serious as anything.
“See?” Jake says softly. “That’s another thing others can’t do—but we can. And pinky promises never break.”
Lo’ak nods solemnly. “Ever?”
Jake squeezes his finger gently. “Ever.”

Jake Sully loves his son. He just doesn’t always understand him.
Told primarily through Jake’s POV before, during, and after The Way of Water, this fic explores Lo’ak’s childhood, rebellion, and the cost of silence, carrying its consequences forward into Fire and Ash, where love, guilt, and survival are anything but simple.

Summary
Isaac Garroway is a child of God. Even more so than the rest of his community, for he was sired by the priest himself. Thus, the odds are in his favour; enhanced protection is guaranteed when one's father customarily communes with the heavens.
And yet, isolation eats at Isaac for the exact same reason. Most children would prefer to chase each other in the fields, tumbling through tall grass and bundles of yarrow, limbs and hair and laughter tangling into each other, rather than concern themselves with matters such as God's relentless gaze, Bible symbolism, or the fate of the human soul post-mortem.
Which is why, when the opportunity to make a friend arises, Isaac leaps at it without a second thought, clinging to his new playmate like a peregrine's talons to a songbird. Even better, he realises that he somehow managed to find an angel of all things. A real angel! With rows of wings and crowns of eyes and... a throat laced with excessive teeth?
And that angel - Or rather pretense of an angel, but words are fickle things, are they not? After all, every demon used to be an angel once, before the fall - is called Abaddon.
