In the mirror I see a kind of time undone, childhood’s wide eyes, a birthday song begun
Tim gets a text inviting him to celebrate Damian. On July 19th. It has to be a coincidence. There’s no way his family would throw him a surprise party for his 18th birthday. He won’t get his hopes up and he’ll support Damian like a good brother would. Except he does get his hopes up. Like an idiot.

Summary
Jack Drake wasn’t the best parent, but at least Tim had one, right?
He could’ve been an orphan like the rest of the strays pulled into Bruce’s orbit, bound together more by trauma than choice. Damian was the only one with a real tie, an unshakable claim. A family, but only technically.
And still—one Tim was never quite part of. His father made sure of it.
Jack kept him just far enough away to remain separate, on the fringes, close enough to see everything he was missing but not to belong, to be chosen.

Contrary to popular belief, it is possible for someone to experience loneliness while surrounded by others. Isolation will typically bring to mind images of an empty room or a remote location. However, a house full of people can feel twice as lonely as an empty one.

Summary
Growing up, Tim had rarely thought to be grateful of his parents. Grateful to them, yes. He learned to be thankful from the moment he could form the words ‘thank you’. But he was never particularly grateful of the two people who were so rarely in his company. It did not matter, in the cold marble and glass world he lived in, whether or not one loved their parents.

Tim doesn’t understand why Bruce is making such a big deal over this. Sure, he didn’t invite Bruce to his GED graduation but that’s normal. Bruce never comes to any of his events, and Tim learned to stop asking. It’s always been this way…So why is Bruce looking so devastated?
