Summary
Troy Barrett has always been sensitive, it's something his father tried and failed to beat out of him. It was engrained into his very bones, but he'd learnt to push it down to only crack once alone. He laughed with the jokes, joined Dallas's name calling, or starting fights, and trained hard.
He'd done everything he could to keep his job stable in his team. And he'd been traded, to fucking Ottawa after making the dumb decision to tell Coach that Dallas was being weird. He could have handled it, but he had to go and tell.
Ilya Rozanov was an arsehole, but a carefully curated one. He didn't act like Barrett did, he was careful, and now said arsehole was going to be part of their team.

It was a hard decision to take in Luca Haas.
Ilya had spent weeks thinking it over, confirming over and over with Shane that he was okay with it. Confirming over and over with himself to make sure he could handle it. Two littles in one house would be tough, especially considering how particular Shane could get. But Shane had promised he didn’t mind, both while big and little. And Ilya had made sure he could change his mind at any point, but after a trial period, Luca would be there to stay.

As it turns out, no one ever taught Luke how to tie a little green baby to his back one-handed, but Luke thinks he's pretty gods-damned good at problem-solving under pressure, thank you, and the baby is at least semi-cooperative. When he's sure the kid is strapped in as tight as he can get, Luke pauses, and reaches back. His fingers graze the wide point of the baby's fuzzy ear. "Well, kid," says Luke, and his voice is a little rough, but not bad, all things considered. "Carrying you on my back while getting the absolute banthashit kicked out of me, at least this feels familiar."
The baby coos in his ear, and then kicks him hard in the kidney. Yoda used to do the exact same thing. Somehow, it's a lot more endearing now.
Or: Luke Skywalker solves a number of life-or-death problems, makes some new friends, falls abruptly in love, and gets shot into space, all in the same day.
