    Summary

This…this was different, though, than most of the other leads he’d followed.
His mother, or Peter, or even his own idealized planning and endless expectations.
There was kindness in this, leaking out through every crack in the faux stoicism. There was a softness, a care, that he’d only ever seen the edges of, up until the night before the Unknowing. Here, now, it was on full display, just barely sheened over with the resolute determination Jon always took on when he had his mind set to something. For now, leading them. Home.
    Home.
    Hm.
It struck him, not for the first time - he’d…he’d probably follow Jon anywhere, actually, with no questions asked. Probably wouldn’t even bitch about it too, too much. Ha.
Maybe he’d ask questions later, sure, once their breathing calmed and the running had stopped, but…he’d follow. Without a doubt.
    …Case in point.

    OR

Jon and Martin escape the Lonely. Martin...doesn't quite remember what happened, immediately following. Jon needs to explain it to him, in all the gory, heartbreaking, emotionally volatile details.

    Summary

Wearing sensible shoes and with a raincoat bundled up in his backpack together with a voice recorder, an underwater camera, three notebooks, and a packed lunch, along with various other paraphernalia, Jon sallied out into the October drizzle in search of the Beast of Hexley Lake.

He didn’t expect to find the Beast immediately, of course. Cryptids were notoriously shy in general, and water-dwellers even more so, given that they tended to live at the bottoms of lakes and the deepest parts of the sea and thus were not terribly accessible by humans. So it came as quite a surprise when he stopped off in the local post office to make enquiries and was met with a look of mingled surprise and pride.

“Oh aye,” the woman there told him. “That’s our Martin, that is. Never heard of anyone taking an interest in him before. They’re all off up Loch Ness way.”

Cryptozoologist Jonathan Sims has finally gained funding for a field study of the Beast of Hexley Lake. He doesn’t expect to fall in love with the Beast along the way, but these things happen. Right? Right??

The agony of having a crush: Jon is one specific person, but really, he could be anyone.

Or, he could have been anyone, until the day he walks into the cafe carrying a porcelain clown doll, because Martin is dead certain that that is not something anyone else has ever, will ever, could ever do.

Martin certainly doesn't mean to stumble across a freshly-post-Buried Jon trying to untangle his hair, but when he does, it would be a bit rude not to try to help, right?

    Summary

“We’re not stopping,” Jon says. “You’re only getting your surprise earlier than planned.”

“My — what?” Martin asks, baffled.

He’s careful as he opens his eyes, keeping them on the ground for a few lingering seconds before he gives Jon a look. Jon merely raises a perfect arched eyebrow at him in return. It’s incredibly pretentious and condescending, from Martin’s angle on the floor, and his treacherous dick twitches against his pants.

“I might not be as organised as Elias,” Jon says, accent a bit sharper. “But I don’t forget anniversaries, Martin.”
