"Captain de Vere," Damianos says, his voice a low rumble in Laurent's ear. This close it was impossible to feel anything except the hard wall of muscle behind him, the way Damen's hand curls around his arm, the way the point of his dagger digs into his neck. "I've been expecting you. You're not very subtle, you know, but I didn't think you'd make it this easy."
"I'm always obliging," Laurent says through gritted teeth, wondering how far an elbow in Damen's gut would get him. Damen, as if anticipating this, tightens the grip on his arm. It's just as well, really. He'd probably only break his elbow if he tried.
"I've heard a lot of words used to describe you, Captain, but I don't think 'obliging' was ever one of them."
"Oh?" Laurent says, trying desperately to even out his breathing, to calm his rapid heartbeat. "You've been listening to gossip about me, then. What words have you heard, if not that?"
"A lot that I can't repeat in polite company," Damen says, laughing lightly.
"You wouldn't say I'm polite if you knew where I was thinking about shoving that dagger of yours right now."

Varka doesn’t quite choke on his own saliva, but it’s a close thing. “Fifty what now?”
“Oh, don’t be like that,” Dori scolds with a shake of her head. “Anyone else would be asking for much more – it’s not every day you stumble upon a book this old and this useful too! A guide to courting for, ah, individuals specific to Nod-Krai and Snezhnaya? It’s practically a trove of information, Sir Varka! Really now, it’s only because you’re my most loyal, most esteemed, most valuable customer that I can afford naming such a low price.”
Or: Varka gets swindled into buying a Fae courting guide, written by a human for other humans. He's also forced to come to terms with his own feelings regarding a certain Lightkeeper (who might or might not be Fae). Shenanigans ensue as he attempts to follow this dubious yet somehow effective guide to the very end.
