“I don’t understand it,” said Herbert, irritation morphing into frustration—frustration’s clipped syllables were distinct from irritation’s. Herbert hated not understanding things. He’d either obsess over what mystified him (the results of an experiment that just didn’t make any sense) or declare it not worth understanding (women). Dan had assumed that love was firmly in the latter category, but maybe it troubled Herbert more than he’d thought.
