And with a single sentence that cuts the fine threads of disappointment and frees her lungs and heart so they’re not at the risk of bleeding dry, Ruby finishes with a soft, “You’re not alone, Weiss.”

Her impassioned cry echoes through the trees, birds flee from their perches to escape the vibrations of Ruby’s fury. Weiss will not be so easily deterred.
She refuses to surrender in the face of Ruby’s perceived rage. She can see what’s under the facade, crafted and lived with the same mask—mastered it—herself for far too many years.
“I want,” she gets in Ruby’s face, her smaller stature insignificant in comparison to her tall presence. Ruby huffs her anger at Weiss’s clenched glare, the familiar tight pull of her white brows strangely comforting. Memories of petty school arguments drag a longing ache from their bones. Then, all at once, Weiss’s intensity takes a sharp, unexpected dive. Her face crumbles.
