Summary
In 2004, Thomas Nightingale and Abdul Haqq Walid signed an agreement. It's a bit like that civil partnership thing the Master of the Folly somehow knows nothing about - except, you know. Magicky.
UPDATE 11/28/17 : I have re-ordered the series so that it is vaguely chronological, which should make reading the "the Faceless Man is a dick" arc in particular easier to read.
