Phainon doesn’t know what to blame, exactly. He just knows that this feeling of failure likes to claw its way into his chest and dig deep. Sometimes it manages its way up his throat, into his vocal chords and out his mouth. He dreamt of seeing a beautiful sea, too beautiful to be real. A man, back turned, walking past the gates of Okhema to embrace his fate, to inherit Strife, to leave everyone behind in the name of the Flame-Chase Journey.He props a large canvas on his easel and he paints golden eyes and blonde hair, his brushstrokes filled with the red markings of painted-on tattoos; while his heart does its best to leap out of his chest, each stroke followed by shaking hands and the tears in his eyes he doesn’t quite shed.

Phainon arrived in Castrum Kremnos under the harmless pretense of a casual visit, hoping to convince the nation’s cold, untouchable Crown Prince to join the Flame Chase Journey. Several failed attempts later, he somehow ends up getting absolutely railed by him instead.

Summary
Phainon is a top-tier assassin—silent, precise, unstoppable. Or at least, he was until Mydei, his target who he accidentally saved.
Somehow, every time he is finally mentally prepared to get rid of him, Mydei wanders too close, flashes a smile, or—worst of all—starts a conversation. Phainon should be annoyed. Instead, he’s distracted. And maybe, just maybe, a little smitten.

Nothing more escaped him. Even that was too much for Phainon, lips pressed into a thin line mired with regret that he had spoken at all.
“I don’t have to what?”
Phainon didn’t answer.
“I don’t have to what, Phainon?” Mydei demanded, sharp and rough, but that was always when Phainon met him head on.
The truth spilled out in a cracked whisper. “Try and love me. When I—when I’m like this.”
Amphoreus’ first solar eclipse was meant to be a time for celebration. But the sight of daylight devoured by darkness dredges Phainon’s old memories and transformations with them in a frenzied haze.
Mydei proves to Phainon that his appearances, and the past entangled within them, has never mattered to him.
