Summary
In which the Dark Urge falls in love, for the second time of his life. And while it is true that for most people, love stories end in tragedy, he is not most people. He is Bhaal's Chosen. And this makes the ending so, so much worse.
"An apple for your horse?" the human woman had asked with a cheeky look to her dark brown eyes, looking up at him with a basket full of fruits propped on one hip.
He had seen her cross the clearing surrounding her house from afar, walking up the path that meandered through trees turned yellow by the arrival of autumn. The internal debate of whether or not he should turn around to not have to speak to her had proved fruitless, and he had stopped walking only when she had accosted him, River halting at his side.
"I believe this is how sad fairytales begin," he'd answered in kind. "Tell me, which ones are poisoned?"
She might have been a spy, after all. A clumsy assassin, believing a simple mortal hand could ever be the end of him. If only. But her laughter had been an unexpected thing, and he'd found himself smiling at her.
She'd winked at him. "Wouldn't it ruin the story, if I told you?"Series

Summary
Astarion should have died that night. In the story we know he did exactly that. Here, things went a little differently and he is very much alive.
However, healing magic has its limitations, and the Astarion who survived is markedly different from the one that fell to the Gur's clubs.
A month into recovery, he's still coming to terms with his loss of independence. Bedbound, partially mute, and being cared for by the same person who saved him in the first place: his mother. Apparently her adventuring days didn't fully end, even after decades of playing at being a proper Upper City wife.
Even worse, soon his beloved father decides caring for Astarion is a waste of time and resources, and tries to convince his mother to send him to... somewhere, anywhere, else.
It's amazing, what you start to notice when you're forced to stop and pay attention to people not named Astarion. So many aspects of his world and family, he now sees all too clearly. Out of the one eye that still works, anyway.
