Summary
Kyoka grew up on stories of the sea: of vengeful sea-spirits rising from calm waters, of ghost ships crewed by those eaten by sharks, of forests of carnivorous seaweed. And of merfolk.
Most of these stories took place in the same area: a triangular stretch of sea centred on the Izu islands, where the ocean boiled and typhoons erupted without warning. The Devil’s Sea, her parents called it. The exact stretch of sea the merfolk-hunter’s map had circled, and that Kyoka had once promised her mother she would never venture into alone.
But sitting in that tavern on Dōjo Island, nursing a beer, Kyoka figured: she wouldn’t be alone. She has the Riot and her crew, and she has Denki. She thought, There’s nothing out there, anyway. And she thought, And if there is . . .
When they voted, it was unanimous. They were heading off to hunt for mermaids.
In which Kyoka and Denki find a mermaid. Or, rather, a mermaid finds them.

Summary
The Shadowlands were the worst for so many reasons. The sun was gone, there was nothing to eat, and it was absolutely freezing. Astarion was used to the cold, with 200 years of vampirism under his belt. The lack of a normal circulatory system meant his body couldn't regulate temperature the same way living creatures did. A vampire could be frozen stiff in minutes before they’ve even noticed there was a problem. He could attest to that. And no additions of hats and scarves made a bit of difference - if there was no heat in the first place for the clothing to keep in.
It really was bitterly cold.

The more you’re different, the more reason people have to distrust you, yeah? And if people distrust you, how can you be a hero? I want you to be safe, and not have to deal with all that scrutiny.”
Hawks was really only trying to help Tokoyami. He never meant for it to go so far sideways.
