Summary
For a brief moment, Joel almost laughs, a dark, angry laugh at the universe that he has suspected for years has been trying to take his youngest from him. Premature birth, slow to gain weight, a heart murmur, her mother’s wayward weekend, two cases of pneumonia, and a collection of broken/sprained bones and concussions from falling off things that only the most curious of kids manage to find themselves climbing on. He’d felt like he’d been part of some sick game of dodgeball, trying to move Ellie out of the way as each new calamity was hurled at them.
Finally, it felt like they had come out on the other side. After almost three years of calm, Joel had started to think they’d made it; he'd won. He’d proven to the world that he should be allowed to keep his baby.
But Joel got too comfortable, too complacent, and now Ellie’s paying the price.

Summary
Sarah turned thirty this year. An age that seemed dreadfully old before and after, an age she felt she was unlikely to reach. It felt like both an achievement and also extremely anticlimactic.
There was a movie Sarah watched with her friends before about a teenage girl who wants to be thirty. What had she said? Thirty, flirty, and thriving. Sarah snorts, wrings out the final shirt, climbs onto the fire escape, and begins pinning the wet items to the line there. Try thirty, still living with your dad after surviving the actual end of the world, raising your 10-year-old sister, and, some winters, barely surviving. It doesn't have the same ring.
A little AU where Sarah survives outbreak night and sixteen years later lives a relatively quiet life with her dad and sister Ellie in the Boston QZ. When they're forced outside the wall to save Ellie, Sarah has to fight in ways she hasn't before for her family to survive.

"Ellie is asking Santa to make it snow for Christmas." Joel blinks at her. Is that all he thinks? Sarah raises her eyebrows to emphasize that she's serious.
"Well, I hope she's asking for other stuff, specifically a Jurassic Park Lego set," Joel replies, unsure what else she thinks he can do about that.
Sarah exhales loudly, "Dad! You don't understand; what if she stops believing in Santa when it doesn't snow on Christmas? What if that is what breaks her belief? Can you live with that?"
Joel scrubs his hand over his face. "Baby, she's 5, but she's not dumb; she knows it doesn't snow much here. She probably said that trying to make a joke."
Sarah shakes her head forcefully, curls flying. "No, I think she's serious. If she's already questioning Santa, and then it doesn't snow on Christmas, that may be what convinces her he's not real. I'm not letting that happen." She crosses her arms and sets her jaw in determination.
"What are you going to do?" Joel asks, slightly concerned.
"I don't know yet," she admits, "but I'm not letting her stop believing."Ellie asks Santa to make it snow for Christmas, in Texas. It all goes from there.
