    An alternate modern setting where Jinshi and Maomao meet under different - but slightly similar - circumstances and their feelings develop all the same.

    Her headache is easing a bit, even without the Willow Bark, and she lifts her hands to rub her temples.

    As she does so, a flash of red passes through her field of vision, which is curious, because she’s certain there is no red on any part of her wardrobe.

    She lets go of her head and inspects her hands for any possible blood.

    What she finds is far, far worse.

    A single, fragile piece of thread is looped around her left ring finger. The thread is about a foot long, and she stares at it in horror as it flutters in the breeze from the window.

    This has to be a joke.

    Maomao wakes up after her kidnapping to find that she's been sold of to the Palace as a servant girl.

    That she can handle.

    What she can't handle is the much, MUCH worse issue of the little red string she finds around her finger.

    For some reason, Maomao remembers her and Chue's chat about the Moon Prince loitering around the former brothel.

    Would she be crazy if she considered it? Everyone else in the building believed it was haunted; if Maomao participated in a group hallucination that hardly counted as crazy.

    And so, for some reason or another, Maomao sits on her futon and looks around, before saying, “Um … Ka Zuigetsu?”

    There’s a clatter in the bathroom and Maomao’s heart is in her throat.

    No way…

    When Maomao needs a cheap place to stay, she doesn't even think twice about the low month-to-month rent at the old Verdigris House.

    So what if it used to a brothel, and everyone says it's haunted? She doesn't buy into that stuff and she's faced worse than ghosts.

    But when strange things start to happen in her room, and a pretty boy claiming to be a long lost prince keeps appearing in her bathroom, she might have to pay up.

    Maomao asks the question she always does: what's the cost?

    She should be asking: is she willing to pay it?
