Summary
When he’d left the city comforts behind along with the racket that had only lately begun to grate on his nerves, he hadn’t thought to expect company. Coming up on nearly two hundred years of knowing him better than he knew himself, it turned out Jimmy had a few surprises left in him after all.
Kindling skittered across the brittle grass.
He sank into the chore’s steady rhythm. The wind came up, teasing whitecaps on the lake. The source of that heady familiar scent was less than a mile off now and moving at a fair clip. Either Logan had grown less cautious since Victor last laid hands on him in the foothills of the Rockies or he had his mind set on a thing he didn’t have much patience left to do without.
Whatever that might be, it promised to make for an entertaining evening.

Logan shook his head, cracked a smile in spite of himself. “You know I can smell a lie on you.”
“Oho, buddy. Your sniffer is on the fritz if you think that’s a lie.” Knocking back the icy dregs of his drink, Wade nipped Logan’s out of his hand for a taste. “God, you drink the shittest beer,” he said, and glugged more for the hell of it. “C’mon, I’ve got a suite at the Crest and the tub has jets.”

Wade’s ideas of romance, he’s learned, are unique. That they might align even a fraction with Victor’s isn’t something he’s ready to deal with.
“You think he’s, what, courting me?” Logan snorts. “What for? He wants it, he can come get it.”
“Can he ever,” says Wade, staring off dreamily into space. He folds his hands against his cheek and gives a fluttering sigh. “He’s so big and manly. You’re big and manly, don’t get me wrong, but he’s so big and so manly.”
Logan flicks the middle of his forehead.

“‘Fraid I won’t be much help there.” The far-off scent of gas and grease suggests she’s not entirely out of luck. Logan digs around in his memory for the last big road sign he sailed past. “Might be a town ‘bout ten, fifteen miles ahead. You want me to send somebody out here, or you wanna hop on, call up a tow when we get there?”
The woman chews on the corner of her lip. Just like he figured, now that she’s had a minute for her relief to settle her scent’s tipped to wary. Deserted roadway, rough-faced stranger offering a hand, he’s been here before. Mostly it works better not to push.
